El Abajeno serves very good Mexican grub at very fair prices. All the dishes are large. For lunch I just get one Carnitas Taco since it comes with two tortillas and has so much meat in it I make 2 tacos out it it. Their soups and seafood are all very good. At lunch time they can get busy. Definitely worth a try!

Really good authentic food. The best was the Carnitas Taquito with avocado. We also had the chile relleno which was good but was served dry without the typical ranchero sauce. The beef taco and enchilada were good too. They use really good authentic Mexican cheese which is soft and creamy. Their salsa bar offered an assortment of salsas and other traditional condiments. I can't wait to go back and try the burrito when I have a bigger appetite or someone hungry to share it with.

Had a chicken burrito. Didn't like the chicken. It felt undercook. Ended up removing the chicken and eating the rice and beans..

This is a good Mexican restaurant. Their prices are very affordable. Their menu is pretty limited though. The ingredients are very fresh. I had a chicken bean and rice burrito with some tomato and herbs. It was pretty tasty. However. It was way too big and their was lots of dark meat and grizzle, which is undesirable for me. Their chips are very good. Come here if you want to be full for 6 hours. Overall it is pretty good, but nothing special.

I've been coming to this place since I was a little girl, with my parents since late 80's. The flavor has never changed very authentic, home made flavor. My favorite is the tostada (I personally like chicken, btw this is the only place I order chicken from. I think their chicken is flavored very well, not bland) their soups and champurrado are very delicious as well. In all, everything I've tried here is always amazing it's never a disappointment!

I had looked forward to this place for a long time, having had a wonderful meal at CA years ago. Alas, I guess I'm just not cut out for this kind of experience. I knew going in that the menu was pri fixe but had been told over the phone that one could order ala carte. In retrospect, the 4 adults at the table were pretty amazed at how our alcohol bill added up and should have known better. When I get past the sticker shock, the food, elegant and unique as it was, didn't live up to a long lasting delicious memory.

I went there to get a burger which is $6 with no drink The burger is smaller than a big mac and the taste was awful and on top of that they added jalapeño when I never ask then the fries where very oily over all not he best and will never return your better off buying at a tams lastly the wait time is more worst than in n out

5 stars if you like good mex food in culver city. Parking can be tough so prepare to walk a few blocks. Lines are long though you'll get over it :) We really liked the burritos and the carnitas taquitoes (not fried which is great). Good chips n salsa. Guacamole is good too. Get here 30 min Before you are hungry!

This is by far the best Mexican food I've had. I can't believe I'm even saying that. Didn't know it were possible. Best cheese enchilada. Best chicken/carnitas taquito. Amazing beans and rice. One mile from work. Not a good thing for my gut.

Left this place U-N-C-O-M-F-O-R-T-A-B-L-Y full. I got the tostada (serious fucking gringo here; the dude behind the counter just gave it to me 'cuz I couldn't decide what to get). The most important part, though, was the meat. All of it looked so tender, having marinated in juices for hours and hours. And I chose the pork--delish. Not your Mercado-kinda-Mexican fud but most def a nummy and inexpensive place to grab a bite when hangin' on the corner of Inglewood and Culver Blvd. PS: They got Negra!

my mom ate here when she was pregnant with me and I have been eating here ever since. This is my comfort food. A lot of the staff has changed over the years, but the main chefs are still around, and cooking. my favorites are the el abajeno burrito, the super tostada, and the carnitas taquitos. Always order a side of meat sauce to put on everything. Can't go wrong chicken, beef, or carnitas, I change it up. chile rellenos are good too. This always has been and always will be my favorite Mexican restaurant

In the 15 years I've been gorging myself on this wonderful gem, I've never had a bad experience. The food is always wonderful, and the staff is efficient. I recommend taking your food to go. And for the Big Eaters.. The El Abajeño burrito (carne asada, chicken, or pork) will have you in food heaven! I prefer it wet...just FYI in case you wanna get one for me too!

Honestly don't know what is the big deal about this place? Food was bland and the atmosphere was too cafe divy for my taste. For the price of the food I thought it would taste extraordinary but boy was I wrong. All the burritos are wet and difficult to eat. The trays were dirty and the silverware was rusty. I won't be coming back here

Food is great. Not so great customer service. We ended up here for a Sunday family meal. Cafeteria style service. Very crowded this day. Small spaces to maneuver around. I had the carnitas, rice and beans burrito. My sister had the Campechana seafood cocktail. Both were good. Unfortunately, my cousin took a bite of the refried beans and bit into a penny. YUCK! My uncle brought it to the attention of the cashier expecting to speak to amanager. No one ever came out of the kitchen to at least apologize. Hopefully they remedied this problem because their food is yummy.

This place is amazing! Great authentic Mexican food and super inexpensive! The quantity is huge for less than $5.00. I'll definitely come back.

giant portions great carnitas tacos the carne asada plate was delicious stingy with the guac though and the salsa needs more kick otherwise delicious

Yummy greasy but good Mexican food. I would eat here every day if I could. I feel like I'm eating home cooked food. I haven't tried something my tummy hasn't liked.

Just stumbled on this place a few weeks ago when some friends suggested it for lunch. Authentic Mexican food, good prices, big portions, friendly people. I'm a fan. Only gripe: parking situation is a bit wacky. If you're going with a group, try to consolidate into the smallest, most maneuverable vehicle. (you'll see what I mean)

I wanted so much to love this place but for me, bigger does not necessarily mean better, so a massive serving of just decent food does not garner any more than 2 stars from me. Granted, the food is solid but the whole experience of dining here fell far short of the many five star reviews. First of all, what is up with the ordering/waiting for food while waiting in line system? For those who've never been, you stand in line to order at the counter & then proceed to stand at the counter with a cafeteria tray waiting for the kitchen to finish up your food. This causes congestion because it's not exactly fast food. The operational inefficiency was not the best introduction considering I was starving and had low-blood sugar irritation. The food looked pretty promising (even though most of the meats sit in a vat cafeteria style) and they certainly do not skimp on portions. But the food itself, even in my ravenously hungry state, was not that great. Sure it was tasty enough but nothing was spectacular. I tried the spicy shrimp dish which was underwhelming. While the sauce was decently flavored and had a decent kick, the shrimp was pretty paltry. The meat and pork burrito was ginormous but too salty and seemed to focus on size rather than flavor. The sopitos were decent enough but not particularly noteworthy. Also, what is up with their guacamole? It was watery and lacked real avocado flavor = blech. The only reasons that would motivate my return are: (1) if I was already in the neighborhood and just wanted super cheap eats, (2) the salsa was pretty damn good, and (3) beers are dirt cheap ($2.95 a bottle -- make sure you order two in line otherwise you gotta get right back in line).

Third time here, first time having the burrito and it is THE WORST burrito I have ever had in my entire life. And I've lived in/eaten mexican food in places with no Mexicans--i.e. France! even that was better!! Al Abanejo doesn't even bother trying to keep the burrito together with tin foil, they just plop it in a styrofoam container where all the ingredients can poop out. There wasn't even real salsa-- just huge slices of tomato, lettuce and raw onion (WTF), along with beans and rice. What vegetarian burrito doesn't come with cheese or guac?! Even the tortilla wasn't grilled/heated and was chewy. I hate wasting food but cannot finish this. Needless to say, I am pretty angry right now this burrito almost ruined my day. 4 stars for my first two visits here with the awesome taquitos, but 0 stars for the burrito. If this is what other items on their menu taste like, this does not bode well.

My wife has been eating here with her family since she was little and introduced me to this place when we started college. That might be the actual reason why I married her. Without my mom or grandma to cook me food, I HAVE to eat here at least once a month or I get the shakes. Best of the Best. None better for hole-in-the-wall Mexican food. I will spit on my grandmas tamales to eat here. Giant portions of great food for a good price.

I read Brian B's review and it reminded me why I must stop into El Abajeno at least once every month or two. The cons: not the best neighborhood, parking lot is small, long waits in line. But, the pros: The most delicious carnitas soft taquito in the world. I have been enjoying these for over twenty-five years, and the quality has been consistent for that long!! Dine in, or take out, no matter, this place rocks.

5 stars - mexican homestyled perfection, inexpensive, big portions My fav is the Abajeño Burrito. I can always gauge a place by their biggest burrito and this one is the best on the Westside. Everything else I tasted is great too! As a native angeleno raised on mexican food this is the tastiest homestyle mexican food I have found in southern california so far and I've searched high and low, near and far. My mother even moved this restaurant to the top of the list. It even satisfied my obsessive foodie wife! On top of all that its local and they have great bike parking with security! Anyone that rates Abajeño low just doesn't know mexican food, has no taste or just has a weak stomach. If you're complaining about lard then maybe you need to exercise more and earn that taco!

Great Mexican food. You walk up to the cooks on the other side of the glass counter and point at what you want and it is done, served and given to you. I highly recommend caldo de res and chile rellenos.

I tried this place off a recommendation from Facebook peeps. It's right next to Sanchez, so several people said I would like this place as well. It's not bad. It's not that good either. They beans have just a little too much grease in them, which takes from their flavor. Other than that, the other elements were good. The guacamole was very good with tomatoes, onions, and a heavy dose of cilantro, topped with a sprinkle of cheese. Chips were fresh and still hot with a little oil on them. Their regular salsa has a good flavor with a little kick. Green salsa isn't great. I eventually liked the dark red salsa, but it could've been hotter. I had the carne asada burrito, but the man behind the counter suggested I try the chile colorado or chicharron. Burrito was just over $7, but I think it's because it came with guacamole. Other burritos were $4.50, including that beef red chile burrito he was talking about. At that price, I may go back to try it. I'm not too enthusiastic about this place, but I'll give it another go.

Same experience as previous reviewer. Security guard at parking lot is major a-hole. I refuse to eat at this place until they put up actual legible signs, visible by people with 20/20 vision, that say the parking lot is for their restaurant only, and find an attendant who doesn't get rocks off telling people where they can't park in a rude way.

I just had a carnitas taquito brought back for me and I gotta say...fantastic! It was cold and I still loved it! I wish I had ordered more stuff to try! Their taquitos aren't fried so it's basically just a soft corn taco ...two tortillas stuffed with the meat of your choices -topped with shredded jack cheese and avocado. There's enough meat in there to make it into two tacos (which I did!). The green salsa was fantastic. I didn't care for the spicy fire roasted one but the other red one was really good. Maybe a little salty but that's okay in my book. The carnitas weren't greasy but didn't have much flavor, I don't care because that's what the salsa is for in my opinion! I'll be back to try the rice and beans and carne asada. I heard they have cheap beer too...I"m always glad to find another divey mexican place!

The line to get food here is always long, but don't let that scare you off, they are pretty quick. The Fiesta Burrito is the best! They definitely don't skimp on the portions. The burrito is huge and nearly impossible to finish in one sitting. It is drenched in a couple different sauces (no idea what they are, but they are awesome). I ordered taquitos, which were good, but I found out that if I want what I thought of as taquitos, I had to order: flautas...which are also excellent. Pretty much anything you order here, you can't go wrong. The parking lot is small and fills up quickly, so you may have to look for street parking, but this place is totally worth it!

For some reason I never think to go here. This the place where I discovered Chilaquilles. And they ruined me! Because they suck just about everywhere else. Here they use yesterday's tortillas and every other place tries to make do with tortilla chips, which is just not the same. You can even get the 'quilles customized with chorizo or whatever. I also love their chips, and tacos, or anything with a corn tortilla involved, as they grind the masa on the premises. The salsa and guac are not great, but that's a small sin, really.

Solid Mexican hole-in-the-wall. Burritos the size of your head and excellent enchiladas.

I've only had the carnitas taquitos here and suspect that's all I will ever have. They're greasy and probably not super healthy but they're the most delicious carnitas tacos I've found in LA and I've lived here all my life. You can tell the food is made with love, straight out of a family kitchen.

we've been doing this thing where we do mexican every tues nights. it's a good tradition. el abajeno is an authentic hole in the wall with ample parking. the food is tasty... and the portions are just right. the service is great. you order cafeteria style and they bring it to your table if it's not counter ready. the prices are great. need to try the breakfast. also, they are located next door to a liquor store that has some of the finest mexican candy selections i've seen in LA. just saying.

I've only had the beef taco which is a beef stew taco and not carne asada. It comes with cheese and avocado. The avocado doesn't cost extra! sweet! The meat is so tender and flavorful I will be coming back to try more items on the menu.

My husband and I frequently eat here, and we always order the same thing and split it. The pollo super tostada. It's huge! This place is a hole in the wall and inexpensive, and definitely worth a visit or two or three. Ample parking.

I made a burrito list but my previous review of El Abajeno didn't have anything to do with burritos. So of course, I used that as an excuse to get a burrito from El Abajeno this afternoon! I don't care what people say, I am a huge fan of cafeteria-style joints. You get to see what looks good that day and you can be sure they make it exactly how you like it. Take my carnitas, beans and rice burrito. If you order it straight from the menu, the burrito comes with nothing else inside and smothered in meat sauce. While that may be fine with other people, that is totally not my style. First, I like some avocado and cheese added to the burrito. The avocado adds creaminess and the cheese gives it a little tang. Nice. Second, I am a huge hater when it comes to wet burritos. I like to eat my burritos with my hands, not a knife and fork. I like to think that's how the inventor of the burrito intended it to be, a hands-on food. Probably not, but I get these weird thoughts in my head and they just stick. Pretty soon I think of them as facts. Like the more you push the walk button at a crosswalk, the faster the light will change. Absolutely not the case but I'm always the idiot pressing the button non-stop until the light changes and then thinking to myself, "See? The light changed!" Anyway, I do take the meat sauce on the side. I use it as a dip for the chips or I pour a little on each bite of the burrito. After the addition of the cheese and avocado, the burrito runs around $8. Not bad for a huge burrito with a bag of chips. Don't change a thing, El Abajeno.

This place is one of my favorite Mexican spots in all of LA! Just thinking of an El Abajeno burrito really warms my little heart. These ain't no pansy little girly sized burritos. No siree, these burritos will take a grown man down. They are fucking MASSIVE, messy, and insanely delicious. I'd actually recommend splitting a burrito between 2 people, and then maybe, just maybe, getting a small taco or taquito to share. I really can't stress the portion sizes here enough. Its insane. And delicious. And you can get away with dining for 2 for $5-6. You must must must get the carne asada avocado taquito. It will blow your fucking mind. I've had a few other things on the menu, but this little bundle of joy is definitely their shining star. I'd say its most definitely worth the trek to check this place out. Its some of the most delicious home style Mexican food I've had here in LA.

My family and I have been patrons of this eatery since I was a kid. The food is still excellent and the prices are fairly moderate if you are taking the family. Parking really hasn't changed much since I was a kid, it gets worse every year as more people hear about. Pro: -Food is great -Prices are moderate -Friendly enough staff Con: -Parking sucks, it has a small lot for about 15 cars max. -Line to get food can sometimes be long especially on the weekends and during lunch -No RSVP -Not much of a wait staff, only a busboy or two -Small dinner, again a problem on the weekends if you go with the family.

If you are in the mood for some authentic Mexican style burritos in the west side of LA this is the spot!!! Big burritos where they are not stingy with there meat, great tasting and at a good price! I suggest Lengua (cow tongue) THAT IS THE BEST!!!! but if it's too out there for you then an asada or chicken burrito is good as well. ONCE AGAIN BEST BURRITOS ON THE WEST SIDE OF LA!!!!

I went here again last night, making it my 3rd trip. I have a strong prejudice against Westside Mexican food, I'm not gonna lie. Let's just say "Tito" would get murked on the streets of East Los. His cries for help would fall on deaf ears by the likes of El Tepeyac and King Taco. His shredded beef tacos and green "guacamole sauce" would go untouched by the hungriest of vatos. But last night El Abajeño won me over with his self-titled burrito. He uses two tortillas to store a massive amount of beans, meat and rice which are all good. The vets throw on some of the salsa that comes with the chips and wash it down with some cold horchata and relax in the safety of Culver City. Now don't get me wrong, East Los is still the undisputed champ, but El Abajeño is one step in a long redemption process that West LA has to undergo before they can hold their own against their Eastside counterparts. I'm gonna go out on a limb and credit the Culver City projects with this phenomenon since it's within walking distance and I'd like to think their standards are higher than those surrounding Tito's.

I've only been here once but I was thoroughly impressed. It's a food counter with a variety of mexican foods. The carnitas tacquito is EXCELLENT - more like a taco with a fat mound of tender carnitas, topped with a bit of cheese and avacado, rolled in a bit of LARD. damn! Also got the grande burrito with carne asada (they use two HUGE tortillas to construct it). Not only did it take 4 people to slay that beast, it was delicious! I can't recommend it for just one person though, just too ginormous. The seating area was nicer than I was expecting - it's definitely comfy and I thought the servers/cashier were all very friendly. Salsa bar was pretty sorry, as was the jamaica (tasted really artificial). The other diners were mexican families - always a good sign. Apparently this place has been in business for 30+ years - it's easy to see why it's still thriving. I love Tacomiendo across the street for tacos but I'll be back here to try the mexican stews and such at the counter.

Just got back from my first lunch trip to this joint. If my taste buds smoked, they'd be out having a cigarette, basking in the after-glow. My doctor would not approve, but I sure do. I tried the much lauded taquitos for this inaugural visit, one carnitas and one asada. I think I liked the asada version better, but both were quite tasty. Co-workers were similarly pleased. We'll be back.

Abajeno's is one of the best Mexican restaraunts in the greater Los Angeles area. Also when you see the place filled with natives, you know it's a winner. It's a very simple, down to earth eatery .Nothing fancy about it which is a giveaway that it's delish! Everything is extremely fresh and delicious. Tacos carnitas #12, are some of the best tacos I've ever had. Lots of warm, fresh carnitas which is not fatty at all, topped with yummy jack chesse (not skimpy at all) and a huge slice of avocado. They rice is the very best, nice and moist never over or under cooked and tastes like it should, nothing wanna be about it. Even better, the prices are outstanding. Normally you would pay over $10 for a meal like this, not here. It's under $9. Their chesse enchiladas are some of the best around and made right then, not kept in a casserole pan on a warmer.

So far in my expedition of LA burritos, this has been one of the largest I've had. I had the chicken, rice and beans burrito and it was good and plenty. I was mostly amazed at how large the burritos were.

  • E D F.

Okay, I'm brown so automatically my review has street cred. The burritos here are totally amazing. Large and satisfying (that's what she said!). I highly recommend trying the carnitas burrito. The area where this restaurant suffers is the rest of the menu. It's not bad but it's not good enough to raise it's rating to a 4 or 5 star. Their salsa is pretty damn good though. In fact, I am guilty of taking extra salsa to store at home. I'm also guilty of gulping them down like tequila shots. so good!

I have been coming here since I was a kid. This is definitely a great authentic Mexican restaurant. This place definitely beats Paco's Tacos any day. If you are truly looking for authentic Mexican food this is the place. I am particularly picky with Mexican food because well I am Mexican. They have amazing beans and rice, which I think says a lot about a Mexican restaurant because if they can't get these two side items right, well that will definitely say a lot about their food. I highly recommend the carnitas tacos and their abajeno burrito, which is huge! Also their posole is pretty good here.

  • Kara S.

It's good because it's cheap and the portions are big. But I wasn't amazed by the food. In fact, given that the reviews on Yelp were raving about the dishes, I'm slightly disappointed. I even ordered what seemed to be the most popular item - the carnitas taquito. It was basically just a lot of meat and an avocado in a tortilla. And the meat wasn't really anything to write home about. And for some reason the way to the bathroom was blocked off. I will say that the place gets a lot of business. So maybe I'm just not getting it. I wouldn't drive out of my way to have it, but if I was in the neighborhood and someone was craving it, I would try it again.

this place is soooo good! I've been going here for about 15 years and have always been satisfied. food portions are huge and for a reasonable price! Nachos and burritos and HORCHATA are my favorite! Make sure to add the abajeno meat sauce to every entre you get! it just makes everything taste so much better! I moved a little further away but I still find time to eat here and I bring my boyfriend & friends each time! We all love it!!

All I have to say is that their largest burrito can feed a small village or a large sumo wrestler. Its impressive in size and even more impressive watching someone try to eat it. All of the food I tasted was delicious. Need to go again soon.

  • Mike G.

I don't really understand all of the high reviews. Maybe I came on an off day or something, but overall, my experience was fairly underwhelming. I got the beef taco dinner plate, which was comprised of two beef tacos which were awkwardly really mediocre, lacking any real flavor. The same could be said of the beans served along with the tacos. My favorite part of the plate was the rice, which was super moist and tasty, but even that got ruined for me when I tried a portion of the rice which must have been scraped from the side of the container it was cooked in because it was thoroughly burnt. The tacos were also served with a green sauce which was unlike anything I have had before. I am not sure what it was, but it too was impressively bland. They did have some tasty guacamole.... so I guess that is something.

What can I say about this place that hasn't been said already. This is my all time standard for good no frills authentic Mexican food. I've been comin here for over twenty years and one of the few place the BF will go for Mexican food. This place has not changed at all. The food taste exactly the same as it did the first time I lined up with tray in hand. The portions are generous, service efficient and beers cold. Believe the hype or lack there of in the reviews. This is not fancy shmancy restaurant. You will not even get table service here. It's cafeteria style dining and I wouldn't have it any other way!

  • Krystallin R.

this is my new favorite mexican restaurant on the westside. if you like Tito's or Paco's, you will LOVE El Abajeno. This is a no frills joint. you wait in line to order your food cafeteria style. You walk down the counter with your tray, and pay before you sit down. There is a salsa bar with lots of spicy choices. Not like Tito's watered down salsa. And the menu is 20 times as big. It was so hard to make a decision. I ordered the Chicken Tostada. It was the size of the plate! Portions are large, so go with a hungry tummy. I think it was about $8. My BF ordered the carnitas taquitos. Our total was $17. The taquito's were more like soft tacos. Not the crunchy fried rolls we're used to. the restaurant decor is what you would expect of a small mexican restaurant. it's probably not a first date spot, but definitely a great casual fast food restaurant. i noticed that most people ordered their food to go.

Categorize this spot in: Wanted mexican food close to work, yelped it, drove out, grubbed, yelped delivered! Only come here if you're hungry as hell, or you don't mind scarfing it down in front of your co-workers. Fresh food, quick service, huge burritos, tasty taquitos (recommended!) make this place a great mexican food spot! Make sure to get your burrito wet! Sauce is pretty good. The carne asada taste like your backyard boogie bbq, chopped up. yummmm! I'll be coming here more often!

One of my favorite local mexican restaurants. Their Carnitas taquitos are AWESOMe as are their Carne Asada Quesedilla. The burritos...not so much...its too big.

The tacos here are well worth their weight in gold. That's because these tacos are huge and packed with meat. I also got a torta and the bread was alright but it certainly satisfied my appetite. Wash it all down with this tasty beverage, whore-chata. Oh man, what a meal. More tacos or go get dessert. Mmmmmm, dessert, we ran out of there so fast that I forgot my drink on the table. It was still half full. Dammit, I'm going back to this place. Now only if I can find this taco place Mike talks about that has it in a hamburger bread as a taco with meat. Let's eat.

I went here yesterday around 1:00pm. Yeah, it was lunch, but I had just gotten up about 2 hours earlier so I was kind of feeling like some breakfast. What to do? I ordered both! I got the chorizo and eggs breakfast as well as a carne asada taco and a chicken taco. Gotta have the tacos! The chorizo and eggs was decent. I would have liked more spice to the chorizo though, as it was kind of bland. Not to worry though, I added some salsa from the salsa bar and was good to go. The breakfast plates come with rice, beans and tortillas. No beans, double rice for me. The tacos were really good. Only a couple dollars each and packed with meat! The shredded chicken taco was literally dripping with juice. It came with cheese and had a great flavor. The carne asada taco was great too. Big chunks of meat and came with onions, tomatoes and cilantro. They have a pretty big menu, including all kinds of tacos, burritos, tortas, taquitos, enchiladas, breakfast plates, soups, etc. All reasonably priced and well worth it for the amount of food you get. Getting there at 1:00 on a Sunday, the line was pretty long, but it was definitely worth the 10-15 minute wait. I hear one of their burritos is made with two tortillas, packed with meat and veggies and is absolutely huge! Next time...

The BEST ever. I've been a loyal follower of this place ever since i could remember. For what you pay at the register and the timeless quality of the food you can't beat it. Best thing to try here is the carnitas tacos..... Best ever; a corn tortilla smothered with carnitas avocado and cheese..

It's funny. I grew up in a house that was spotless. My parents would have us clean before and after meals. Floors mopped everyday. The best thing was the food was ALWAYS good. We often hear that the best food comes from greasy spoons. El Abajeño doesn't disappoint. If I were not introduced to this place by a (Nicaraguan) friend, I would have missed some of the best Mexican food on the Westside. You can't go wrong in this place. You also won't go broke. The test of truly good food is that it taste like it came from your Mama's or Abuelas cocina (that's kitchen for you gringos). So it's not much to look at from the outside and the parking may be enough to drive you away but I have never had a problem parking my SUV here. Take the chance and go inside. You order and are served cafeteria style. The menu is a big board above the steamer tables and the trays are in the corner. Place your order with the first server behind the steamer counter Ala "Soup Nazi" style. LOL... send a friend to search out eating real estate. I usually come for breakfast but almost anything you want is served all day. The Huevos Rancheros are to die for. As with most all other plates, they are served with a good sized order of rice and refried beans. Try the chicken Chilaquilles. Not to dry and not soupy. I have never had an order that I could finish there. Sunday I ordered the Chile Verde for breakfast(actually) early lunch and again Winner, Winner, Winner. My partner in crime had the chicharon in red sauce. This is fitness suicide but man, what a way to die.... The pozole and menudo are also really good with just enough spice. I am making myself hungry... Even the coffee is decent. They have this giant burrito I am wanting to try it is huge but even my adventurous group are afraid of that monster. Back to the parking. There is a "guard" on lot duty but I think that is to keep things moving along at the Carneceria next door. If you love Mexican food like I do and I LOVE MEXICAN FOOD you can not go wrong. I believe they serve beer as witnessed by the bottles on tables next to the bowls of menudo but since I have never ordered one, I'm not sure if they serve it or it is bought next door at the liquor store. Take a trip and bring friends you cannot go wrong here. Your ass and belly might curse you later on the treadmill for the workout you will need to up after getting hooked on this place. Buen Provecho!!!

I had the huevos rancheros for breakfast the other day. This was the first time I had their breakfast. DAMN! That was some good huevos :) ! It must've been the sauce or something, but I wasn't supposed to eat the whole thing, but before I knew it, I scarfed that bad boy down. The beans are very yummy, which means they were probably cooked in lard. It was very comforting and got me through the morning and the afternoon. Needless to say that I didn't need lunch later that day. For $4.95 you get the huevos rancheros, beans, rice, and some tortillas. That is a great deal. 4.5 stars!

Cost & Portion - 4 stars Taste : 3.5 Items Ordered: Chorizo & Eggs, Huevos Rancheros Sunday morning @ 8am. Quiet as no early birds around! Saw people in line getting bowls of menudo (made a note to order that in the future if return).. but ordered dish mentioned above. Food was decent - flavourful and ok-ed priced as the portion wasn't that big for the items we ordered. Flavour good enough to come back and try other items!

The BEST Pork Taquito's in America!! My dad was a California boy, born and bred, he was also a LD Truck Driver, traveling America many, many, many times over! So believe me, when I say, that if he said it was good, it was probably Great! 30 Years ago, my parent's starting eating at this restaurant, and it's legendary in my family!! We've occasionally traveled hundred's of miles out of our way, just to be able to come here! Originially it was just a hole in the wall place, but now it's a real restaurant! It's sooooooo worth it to go here! This is technically not the greatest area, and parking can be an issue! ORDER THIS!! I dream about these Taquito's! Taquitos Soft Corn Torillas w/ Carnitas (Pork), Queso (Cheese), Avocado & Sauce - $2.80 I regret to say, that I really have not sampled to much else of their food! They have pretty good guacamole, but it's the Taquito's that draw our attention! In fact, if anyone EVER goes to California-Culver City/Inglewood, and wants to bring me back some Taquito's, I would be their BEST FRIEND FOR EVER!!

torta number 9. oh well, i was hoping it'd be like 'love potion no.9' but it wasn't. i had high hopes when we arrived. this place is less than a mile from my house and had a very impressive looking menu over the counter. i will be back to try their giant burrito though. but this is about the torta. i was bold and asked if i could get a mix of meats, they said no. damn, so since i've been getting carnitas a lot i went the other way and got carne asada. the food took a bit longer than a torta should but oh well. finally it comes and i'm ready. sadly i know immediately it will be a let down. the layer of meat was about 15% of the torta. the rest was veggies and refried beans. lots and lots of refried beans. so many beans that the torta was bursting open on multiple sides, spewing beans. when i unwrapped the paper wrapper i discover the next flaw. the bread didn't even cover half of the under side of the torta. so i basically had an open faced carne asada burrito. it all tasted good and i liked their salsas but the construction of the torta and scarcity of meat will steer me clear of tortas from here.

What other Mexican joint around serves tongue? C'mon... raise your hands! That's right... not many... and damn, is it good. I call it the food that tastes you back! Anyhow, El Abajeno's interior is dark... menu that used to be chalked onto the wall... has hot as hell salsa... total local dive. And man... is it tasty! Oh yea... it's cafeteria style too. Burritos, tacos, whatever... it's all good there. The meat is tender, the rice is well seasoned, the beans are tasty, and the soups are good too. DEFINITELY not healthy tho... I must say. If my taste buds are right, I think they use lard. And afterwards, I always feel like crap. Prolly cause I EAT IT ALL. But regardless, I go back cause it taste so good... Viva El Abajeno for being my favorite dive Mexican joint!

Reasonably authentic, reasonably priced Mexican fare. Pretty close to home cooking for many dishes (yes, I lived there for 8 years, so I am picky about my food). Cafeteria style service. Some traditional and some more americanized selections. The friendly server was flexible about substitutions. I enjoyed an order of chicken (the stewed or guisado kind) and a salad. My husband had chicken and rice. Portions were substantial. The salsa roja was good: spicy and tasty. Convenient parking too.

While this might be a little hole in the wall restaurant, the food here is great, and just what I was looking for while I was in the area. Parking area, as mentioned, is small with some street parking... great for some in and out grab and go, or there is fairly adequate seating inside if you want to take your time. While I knew I should have kept it simple, I wasn't in town long enough for multiple trips, so I went for the taco plate AND the taquitos (from number 12) to go with them. :) The taquitos were really good, not overly seasoned, but in a good way. Served on soft (heated) corn tacos. Nothing to fancy, but still delicious. The beef tacos were served on house made hard shell tacos, and we're equally delicious. The meat had more flavor, and everything was hot/fresh. I'd definitely say to check this place out, but be armed the neighborhood is on the down trotted side so you may get stay away vibe at night. Still very good and I would more than recommend it to anyone.

Love them! Have been a customer since I was 3! Everything on the menu is great-menudo on the weekend is the breakfast of champions! Need catering? Arthur is the one to go to-more than excellent service-always on time and accommodating! The line does get long but moves fast-totally worth it!

First of all, idk where the heck a lot of y'all have eaten, but this place is not good. Their rice and beans are alright but when you have to put the whole condiment bar on your food to give it flavor I find that to be a problem. Seriously, save yourself the trip. Lol don't take a chance and say, well all the other reviews are good. I'm telling you, this place is crappy. Honestly, I believe taco bells tacos have more flavor. All of you that have this place 4 stars or above should be ashamed. My root beer was good though. Best part of the meal.

HOLY F*** the portions here are hella big. My burrito had more meat than a black man's....muscles. What? Were you expecting me to say something else? Pros: Good sauce, fast service, big big portions. Chips were great, too. Recommend this to anyone in the Culver City area. Cons: Not enough of a man to eat the big portions of meat. Parking is a b**** to find. Con of all cons: Ate too many beans. My car stunk on the way back home.

Health food may be right for the heart & mind, but Mexican fast food tastes a hell of a lot better. Finding a local joint that offers some of the tastiest traditional favorites of Mexico at crazy reasonable prices is almost like finding a greasy, fatty, and yummy piece of heaven. Such a Mexican fast food flavorland is the wildly popular and busy El Abajeno near the intersection of Culver Blvd. and Inglewood Blvd. in Culver City. Apparently, El Abajeno translates to lowlanders. I have no idea where the lowlands of Mexico are, but the people from there must eat ridiculously huge portions of food because the restaurant's taquitos are heftier than any taco I've tried and the burrito should totally lose the "ito" cause it was as big as my head. Maybe lowlanders refers to the low prices ... cause the food is notably cheap. No wonder the line was so long. Now, the price wouldn't matter if the food wasn't great. Well, it is great. Thank you Christina L. for the recommendation. Too many choices on the wall-long menu, so I went with a standard Fiesta Burrito with Pork, Beef, Rice & Beans. It's topped with a flag of Guacamole, Melted Cheese, and a Red Sauce. They party with the chunks of soft meat and beans for a true flavor fiesta. With a side of fresh Tortilla Chips and Salsa/Jalapenos from the salsa bar, I could barely eat the whole thing. Since I had read about the killer Taquitos and ignored the warnings about the huge portions, I added an Asada, Cheese, & Avocado Taquito. It was loaded with juicy meat and a healthy slice of fresh avocado on soft Corn Tortillas along side more Tortilla Chips. Not only was I so full that I looked like I was pregnant, I actually was eating enough for two. With friendly service willing to customize your order, delicious food prepared just for you, low prices, free parking, and plenty of seating, this fast food joint earns a rare 5 stars. El Abajeno is not a place for a date or business meeting, however, it is a cafeteria-style hole-in-the-wall Mexican expansion of your tastebuds and waistline. Si se puede!

The food here is great. You get huge amounts of anything you buy. It's a very lay back atmosphere. Very noisy, lot's of kids. Don't go if you want a pompous place with cello music in the background. The one HUGE complaint I have is when you order takeout. They NEVER have it ready. Matter of fact, I seriously doubt they start preparing the order UNTIL they see your face. Maybe they are avoiding getting stood up. I don't know, but I have walked in several times to pick up my order, and the restaurant is literally empty, and they'll always say something like "oh, we were very busy, but we will get it started now". I have heard them say the same thing to people that come in to pick up their order while I'm the only one waiting in line. NOT a good practice! That's why I'm only giving them 3 stars.

As everyone is saying, the carnitas taquitos #12. These things are absolutely huge - soft tortillas filled with carnitas and smothered with cheese/guac. I still maintain that the best taco joints are located in East LA, but when I'm not in the mood to drive out that far...this will most definitely do.

Not one of my favorite places I've been. Extremely nice staff, although it feels more or less like a cafeteria. No waiters , you have to buy your chips and salsa. I don't think I will go back .

I've had this place bookmarked for awhile now... how long? since June 2010 and I finally got the chance to come here this past weekend. I wanted to come here to try their chilaquilles. I came here around ten or eleven on Sunday morning and was worried the place would be packed. When we got there, there was easy to find parking in their lot and inside the restaurant there wasn't too many people. What I did notice is that a lot of people were ordering soups so I'll probably have to come back to see how they are! You order first at the counter, pay, and then find a place to sit. From there they'll call your number. I ordered the chilaquilles without the chicken and it came out to $5. I liked the chilaquilles which also came with rice, beans, and chips. IThe chilaquilles was made with cheese, chips, red sauce, and eggs. You have the option to also add chicken to it for $2 more. Although, the dish was fine without the chicken because there was enough eggs in it. Also, the beans and rice were good. And I liked that their salsa bar had fresh oregano! This is a good spot, and I'll be back!

One of my most favorite Mexican restaurants in all of Los Angeles. The El Abajeno Burrito can feed you for four days! The restaurant has its own parking lot with a guard so your ride will be safe while you're dining. Eat in, take out it's all good!

I grew up around the corner from here. It is ingrained in my long-term memory cells as the best burrito in California, heck, anywhere! My usual was always the beef, rice & beans burrito, or the pork, rice and beans burrito. Nobody makes that beef (chili-colorado style) that way. NOBODY. As I got older I started to order the chile relleno and the crunchy tacos. STILL the best anywhere.

There's a few places I go out of my way for to get the best. Burger, In N Out. Cajun style seafood, Boiling Crab. Dim Sum, Elite Restaurant. I come to El Abajeno for the Carnitas Taquito. They call it a taquito but it's more like a mini burrito. I eat one and I'm done. It's two grilled tortillas filled with shredded pork (Carnitas) topped with some shredded cheese and a wedge of avocado. There's a small salsa bar, get the stuff in the big bowl. It's spicy but not crazy hot. Put some of the salsa on your taco and go to town. If you come here for your first time you'll probably order two of these and leave feeling like Augustus Gloop. Willy Wonka reference, FTW! The rest of the food here may be good but I'm afraid I'll never find out.

The Good, The rice, the number 12 with pork, the salsa, the speed, the size of the place, free parking, a security guard that likes the NBA. The Bad...nothings bad, it's not the 4 Seasons, it's good The Ugly...me if I eat this too many times a week.

So I had been searching all week for some good tacos other than the place across the street from me, and when I found El Abajeno on Yelp and saw a photo of the taquito, I nearly fainted. It looked SO GOOD. but I was SO POOR. All week I waited until payday and for a day off, and when that day came, took my roommate, and ordered a carnitas taquito and an asada taquito. Once I bit into the asada, I knew that that entire painful week of waiting was 100% worth it. It was the best god damn asada i've ever had in my life. It was like shaved meaty butter that melted in your mouth. I nearly cried. I kind of did cry. Inside. The carnitas was amazing. 0 fat, just a soft tender pile of slow cooked pork inside a corn tortilla with a slice of avocado and grated cheese that melted as I ate it. HUGE portions. I probably should have just ordered 1, but really, I regret nothing. I remember as I was leaving the restaurant, passing by a table with a small child trying to eat a burrito the size of my leg. Power to you, little man. This is the best mexican food I've ever EVER had.

I have been here twice. I actually just ate here yesterday! The first time my boyfriend took me I ordered a carne asada burrito mojado, which was very good. It was huge! I couldn't finish it. Eventually I had to eat around the tortilla to finish the goodies that were inside. My boyfriend ordered menudo as well as his burrito because I'd never had it before. It was pretty tasty! Yesterday we went for lunch and I ordered the camarones a la diabla. It wasn't as spicy as I thought it was going to be, but it was very flavorful and juicy and I loved it. I love the service here. Everything about this place is great. It's our new weekend breakfast spot!

By far, the BEST Mexican food anywhere! I drive an hour just to satisfy my craving. Parking is a nightmare, but the food is a dream. The meat sauce on the burritos is amazing. My favorite food is the carnitas taquitos (soft shell). YUM!

This place is the go to dinner spot when my wife and I feel like having Mexican. We get the abajeno burrito, wet, with carne asada. This thing is massive and definitely more than enough food for the both of us. Awesome salsa bar to top off your burrito as well. One of the best values in the neighborhood.

carnitas taquitos!!!!!!!!!!!! number 12 with rice and beans.... Been going here for 39 years and the food has always been great.... my parents use to bring me and my sisters here all the time when we were kids and we now bring our own kids here. HA, we drive over an hour just to get our El Abajeno fix 8-) When my parents fly in to California first stop is always here for carnitas taquitos and when they head back to LAX to fly back home last stop is always for carnitas taquitos!!!!

This......this thing I just got from here is not a tostada. A tostada is a delicious crunchy flat-ish food with beans and cheese and veggies and maybe sour cream or guac on it, and some salsa. I ordered carry out, and the abomination I got consists of a box, with maybe 8-12 tortilla chips layered on the bottom, hardly any beans, an assload of guacamole, maybe half a head of iceberg lettuce, some cheese, and onion rings and fucking tomato slices on it. I don't know if I'm more angry over the fact that the onion RINGS and tomato SLICES weren't diced in a size that can fit into my mouth with a normal bite, or that I paid .65 for each of these things to be "extra". Is this a sick joke? Why not just chop your veggies, El Abajeno? In Vegas there was a guy working Tacos Mexico who had only one hand and he chopped tomatoes and onions like a champ. For some reason there are pickled jalapenos in this mix. It came with a sauce on the side. Fucking enchilada sauce. Why on the side? The kid behind the counter says to keep food from getting soggy. Well, this is interesting because El Abajeno must be afraid of thieves robbing the salsa bar blind since you cant get small to-go salsa cups. So to avoid slathering my "tostada" with gross enchilada sauce (!!) I had to just go for it and ladle a slightly more passable salsa on in the restaurant. By the time I got home, my 8-12 tortilla chip "shell" (don't even fucking call it a shell on your menu, Abajeno!) was soggy. Not from my salsa but from the wet lettuce that slathered everything in moisture and left a puddle in the bottom of my styrofoam box. Call it what it is. These are Lazy Nachos. I will never get that $8 back. So much regret.

El Albajeno is a long time known restaurant in Los Angeles. They are famous for their GIANT ALBAJENO BURRITO. They have a lot to chose from tacos to soup... They have food to go or you can sit and eat there too. Check out this place when you have a chance.

Classic Mexican style of American cafeteria food. Big portions, good price. Massive chicken burrito with the gravy is $5.50 ish. Be hungry or it's 2 sessions with it. It's big. Been there forever from what I know. Old school, good to see still going strong. It's not high cuisine; it's about quantity here. But it's solid and consistent.

I was introduced to this place at a very young age with a recommendation from my Uncle. My family and I came here to try the carnitas taquitos. WOW! Not the taquitos I'm used to that's for sure. Since the few times as a kid coming here I forgot about the place. I moved to the Westside recently and came across it while driving. The front looked so familiar, but I still couldn't put two and two together. I suggested to eat here with my boyfriend when were were trying to figure out a place to grub. I was pleased to find out that this was the long lost gigantic taquito hole in the wall joint. Don't come here expecting healthy eating by the way, just indulge and make it up at the gym later. It's worth it!

Call in your order our expect to stand in line for 20+ minutes if you're seeking to have dinner. The place is clean most of the time, there were about 3 seperate occasions i've visited w/ friends to introduce them to this place and there was spilled beer/soda over the tables, chairs and floors. Other than that the staff is very frienly and the menu is friggin' huge with excellent selections. I dislike that the kitchen is cafeteria style and sometimes the food looks as if it's been boiling over a slow burner since the morning. I highly recommend the Fiesta Buriito and the chicken tacos. Superb. I'm definitely a fan and I continue to visit because the look of the food prior to reaching your plate isn't pleasing at all but it's overall taste is delicious and i've never gotten sick lol.

I used to go here all the time, and then I moved away for over a decade. I was meeting up with my college girlfriend and we decided to meet up here because they serve beer, and there is ample parking. Yes, I'm still in love with the carne asada super burrito! Unlimited salsa bar, and friendly service. I had to take away a star because my hubby hated his Chile Relleno plate. *sigh* I couldn't convert him. The kiddies loved their burritos, and sometimes, it is a chore to try to get the kiddies to eat food.

Carnitas Taquito is as good as everyone's been raving. May be a tad on the salty side depending on your palate. It is fully loaded and if you can control yourself, 1 is enough for dinner. However this dish definitely has that addictive quality to it that makes you want to keep eating more. I also had the ceviche tostada...pretty good, not the best ceviche I've ever had but decent enough to satisfy a craving here and there. The chips at this place could use some work...they have a greasy after taste.

AMAZING food!!!! My girlfriend and I went there on a sunday afternoon. Thank god we went at a great time cause this place gets packed so quick. We ordered the super burrito and the carne asada nachos and omg the food was great. Not to mention the horchata that went perfectly with our food. The sides they have are good too. Easily accesible self served. Will definitely be coming back for some more food.

I've found a place to cheat on tacomiendo, my favorite taco place, right across the street too! El Abajeno -Big black dude directing traffic on the parking lot.... super nice, he looks like he will tackle you to the ground if you dare parking there to walk somewhere else in the block(where else would you go on that side of the street? There is a gas station in the corner but you need your CAR to put gas in it) but he is actually really nice. -The line moves fairly quickly, even when there were about 10 people in front of me in line I got out of there with food within 15 minutes or even less. -Dude at the register.....even nicer than the guy in the parking lot, he took the time to answer my questions and has a very pleasant demeanor even when he was so busy -people making your food were efficient and fast -Tacos the lengua... sensational! Tender meat and big chunks too, I love tacomiendo's lengua tacos, these are equally as good. Except tacomiendo's beef tongue meat is diced, easier to eat, and the tortillas make the taco better, so..... I had the pork plate and it was even better than the carnitas I had there before, the carnitas are a tad on the dry side to me but the pork plate is almost like a stew, very tasty, all gone in one sitting, now I feel guilty as I write this but it was worth every calorie Salsas are good, nothing too salty or too remarkable but enjoyable -Tortillas...I have to say, tacomiendo's tortillas are better, I like thick hand made tortillas, my taco broke up two bites into it because the tortillas are just standard size and not hand made and the tongue chunks are kind of big for a taco (still delicious with a fork, don't get me wrong) But the chips at El Abajeno were really good, I usually try one tortilla chip and I regret I even put that on my mouth, not with these! Not greasy and crunchy. Before i got home with the food the whole bag was empty....damn you El Abajeno! 2 extra miles running tomorrow!

Remarkable Mexican food. I've been here twice and both times was very impressed and left happy and full. I've had the chili verde plate once and it was great. I love pork and this pork is super tender, very flavorful, and just tastes damn good. I've also had the fiesta burrito, which is the pork and the beef in one burrito. This thing was big enough to eat for both lunch and dinner, and I did just that. The avocado cream they put on the burrito is out of this world. I could drink that stuff. I'm going to keep coming back here to get my fill of authentic Mexican food (or at least what I know is authentic; please don't break my spirit). Love it. Keep in mind, they plate up everything as you order it and make the burritos and tacos fresh to order, so it does take a few minutes to get your food. It's worth the wait, though.

I usually get one chicken soft taco w/ an horchata. Their chicken is super flavorful and they load your taco with cheese and avocado.. so f--ing good! My only complaint is that they have 2 types of guacamole and if you're not careful and ask for an order of guacamole they may give you this weird green watery substance because you didn't specify that you wanted the "fresh" guacamole. Oh, and the roommate is also Mexican and can't stop raving about their Abajeno burrito because it's HUGE, delicious and a great value.

*I can't believe that after driving past this building on Inglewood near Culver literally hundreds of times over the years, this is my first time stepping into El Abajeno...Ainyo...ainyo. Boy, the acoustics in here are busy...Izzy...izzy. ECHO!!...Echo!...echo.* Okay, so once you get over the lack of sound-dampening interior decor, and maybe that there's no table service--you stand in line, order, wait and pay--you'll choose a table, tear into your food and conceivably blurt out, "Eureka!"...Reka...reka. Carnitas is such a favorite of mine, the only real decision was whether to order it in a tostada atop a fried corn tortilla, or a burrito with rice and beans, which I selected with cheese added. El Abajeno's carnitas is finely shredded, light and fluffy, devoid of fat, but also of those crispy end pieces you get when it's fried well. The burrito can be enhanced by the included cup of warm enchilada sauce. Three types of salsa are also available at the salsa bar--just make sure to double-up those flimsy paper cups before filling them and heading back to your table. Oh, did I mention that it can get a little noisy in this place? Heaven help the diner who gets caught mid-meal amidst a rush of families and their young'uns raisin' a ruckus. That's why another option is to just carry out your order, and possibly call ahead so on arrival you can jump past the line to the cashier. Then, bid the staff a warm ADIOS...Ose...ose.

This is the best Mexican Food on the WestSide! I've been coming here since I was a baby boy. Try the ceviche shrimp, it's bomb bay. They also have posole and menudo and the carne de res nachos. Nothing fancy man and yes there is a long line cause it's good. I wouldn't want to be somewhere without a line cause that says a lot about the place so I don't know what cutie pie is talking about. As for the dude that says it's fast food. I bet he eats his tacos with a fork and knife. STEP UP! lol just giving you a hard time cause I love the place. Peace & Love Manny

Parking Nazi. My review is in regards to their parking only. I pulled into their parking lot, looking for "Taqueria Sanchez", which was the first on my list for this neighborhood. Get out of the pickup, walk to the left and then to the right. Once their security guard figured out that I wasn't heading for El Abejeno, he started shouting at me to move my vehicle, not only was he quite loud, but his vocabulary didn't get past four lettered words. After I knew I was in the right place, I moved my pickup. At which time, I watched him write down my license number. For what? I understand an owners desire to reserve parking for their customers, but perhaps they should hire someone capable of being kind and with at least an 8th grade understanding of the English language. It will take me awhile to forget that encounter and decide to eat at this place. Another way to look at this, if I'm treated like this in the parking lot, who's to say that I'll be treated any better inside the establishment?

Don't eat the chicken. Yuck! I ordered the chicken/bean/rice burrito and it was so disappointing. First of all $5 for a burrito? This thing better be huge!! It wasn't. The chicken was inedible, I started picking it out of the burrito and then there was like no beans! I'm going to give this place another try because it has so many good reviews. I bet the steak is good. Maybe they can turn this around. The staff was perfect and the way you order your food was awesome. Loved that. Also love the set up/ deco.

Found this place I was looking for a good Mexican restaurant for Cinco de Mayo and was pleasantly surprised by this place. Got the Camaron de la Diabla and it was delish! Would've given this place 5 stars, but the smell of bathroom disinfectant was overpowering.

I have been going to El Abajeno for 25 years- it has been my family's go to mexican place for as long as i can remember. The carnitas are absolutely amazing. You can't go wrong with the carnitas taquitos. Also delicious are any of the burritos (the meat sauce they put on top of the burritos is ridiculously good) or tostadas. I've never personally had any of the soups, but they too look delicious. Please go to this place and enjoy!

Good atmosphere and decent food. The meat wasn't anything spectacular and the salsa was not spicy. We ordered burritos but the tortas looked good.

  • Sean C.

Wow, who knew taquitos could be so good. Not sure about anything else here, but if you go just order the carnitas taquitos ($3) or get the combo with rice and beans. Basically comes with 2 soft taco shells and a pile of great tasting carnitas with a slice of avocado which you can make into 2 tacos. The rice and beans, which are typically something you eat a couple bites of at any other place, are actually really good here, and their salsa bar has some great options. Its easy to drive by and not notice this place, but make the stop and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Tip: phone in your order and go right to the front of the line to pick it up

A large selection of items on the menu. I tried the carnitas (couldnt find carnitas tacos on the menu) and they don't serve that in the chopped-up version. My carnitas dinner plate came with a side of rice and beans, a few tortilla chips, and a few tortillas. I asked about the cheese tamales and they don't serve those anymore.

    (4)
  • D C.

Sorry but maybe if you are from the neighborhood then I can see where it is all that. But for me, I just found it ok. We went with a taco de lengua, too much onion. Tamale, sopito de carnitas, cheese enchilada and chicken taquitos. Long line but moves fast enough. 1st time here so I had no idea you had to grab a tray at the beginning of the line like a cafeteria. Good selection of salsa's. Although they do serve beer here I went with the iced tea. Good experience just not great, wow.

  • Manny H.

I've been coming to this place for years. I can't remember how far back. The tacos with cheese and avocado are DELICIOUS!!! Pour on some of their salsa and you're good to go. It can definitely get crowded, but it's worth it. The rice and beans are a great on. It's great to see your food get prepared right in front of you. It's one of those few great Mexican restaurants that are left in LA. I recommend this place to everyone.

We wanted Mexican food and we wanted to try something new. It's so easy to go to the usual places out of habit, and today we had to break away. We found El Abajeno via Yelp and the zip code. There was a line when we walked in but it was nice to wait as it allowed us time to get a feel for the place and time to take in the menu which is posted on the wall above the kitchen. Within a few minutes we saw a few local acquaintances. Clearly, this is a local favorite. Since I am on a chile relleno quest I had one with a beef taco, rice and beans. This was a genuine fresh chile relleno and it was quite tasty but the thick egg coating is not my preference for this dish, and it was served without sauce. I prefer the method used at Gilbert's El Indio. The rice was perfect and the beans were smooth -- possibly a bit on the lardy side, but tasty. My companion had chile verde -- reportedly somewhat salty, but made with quality meat. From what we noticed the burritos seem to be the hot ticket at El Abajeno. Next time! The prices are very reasonable and one plate could really be 2 meals. Go for it.

This was a pleasant surprise and find! After the recommendation by some friends, a group of us decided to have a nice dinner at El Abejeno. The parking lot is super small and tricky. Part of our group parked in the lot, and the other part found a spot on the street. This place is interesting. It's cafeteria style, but the restaurant itself, seating wise, is really nice. I ordered a chicken burrito and it was big and delicious. Most cafeteria style places serve greasy or chicken drowning in sauce. This chicken was soooo yummy and possibly boiled. Each plate is served up with a handful serving of chips. The only odd thing is the liquor store or whatever it is next door.. literally next door. Like you walk out the restaurant door and look into the liquor store. There's a random security guy sitting on a chair in the parking lot too. I was confused by his presence, but oh well. I'd definitely go back here again in heartbeat. Nice, clean, cheap and absolutely delicious.

Dear El Abajeno, I love you and your carnitas. My sister won't let me eat you again, until after my brothers wedding... I am sure she is sneaking off to eat you while I am at work... Tito's has nothing on you. Love Always, Your devoted fan.

I Agree with Lisa G. the Carnitas tacos are excellent! I also love their Chile verde Burritos. Oh and on the Weekend they have excellent Menudo! Beers are inexpensive. Could use a little remodel in the seating area. My father used to bring me here since I was 5 years old. Great Food!

I've tried a lot of chicken burritos in my day but this one is uniquely phenomenal. the chicken is always juicy and tasty and the somewhat sweet beef sauce served on top of the burrito is fantastic. the sauce sounds weird but it isnt. it is SO good. ive been coming here for 16 years and everything ive tried reeks of quality and tastiness, i highly recommend the chicken bean and rice burrito, the enchiladas, and the caldo de res. consistently delcious, consistently my favorite place for mexican food EVER

This place is cheap for the amount of food you get, but it's still pretty high when you compare to street prices. 3+ dollars for tacos (super fuckin large) average prices for burritos (again, LARGE). Sauces were pretty mild and non-offensive. I like my shit hot so I was craving something spicier, but it still worked out. Had a chicken taco, half an asada taco, and half a lengua burrito. The lengua was excellent...

This place is the best. The restaurant is very clean and has a friendly environment. The food is always fresh and ready to be served. It doesn't matter if you want to eat there or take out, they always have fast service and the quality of the food is great. This is a true Home-Style Mexican Restaurant. You cannot compare El Abajeno with any other place that claims to have authentic mexican dishes. They have a great variety of dishes it doesn't matter if go for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Been going to "Vic's" ever since the mid-70s when aerospace was in it's heyday. We used to call their giant El Abajeno burrito the "Sunday Times" since it resembled a rolled up Sunday newspaper on a huge platter. Still go there for lunch and fight the traffic whenever we get the urge from the South Bay area. No other place can beat their burritos and carnitas tacos. They even have the same security guard watching the parking lot for almost 20 years! Someone just brought me 2 pounds of the best chicharrones from Vic's. Has to be the best in LA. Not puffy like store bought kind but firm, lightly salted, handmade skins hot off the deepfry. Two pounds of chicharrones will feed the whole neighborhood!

When I am feeling under the weather, I always stop by for a caldo de res (it's almost as good as my mom's!). The husband's favorite dish are the tamales de rajas (cheese and jalapeno) and also the pork tamales early on Sunday mornings. The rest of the food is ok.

Oh, El Abajeno, how you have disappointed! You used to be great! the food was was always good and plentiful. I moved to the IE, but always had a spot in my heart for you. No more. The food out here is much better! Wifey and MIL ordered chicken flautas...just how old was that grease??? It was rank!! Guacamole?? You call that green liquid, guacamole? NO. That's the crap that comes in a powder and you add water to it. No wonder there was no one there at 1:30pm on 3/31/2011. My Carne Asada burrito was barely passable. Barely.... The meat could be called steak, I guess...it wasn't chicken. Shredded beef is more like it, left too long in the oven at that. The cheese on the refried beans was old, it tasted bitter. Not like Queso Fresco should (or white cheddar). So to wrap it up, the foods NOT fresh. This crap that is being foisted upon unsuspecting locals needs improvement. Big Time. The bar is obviousely quite low, for these other reviewers to give such glowing reviews. So, hasta, El Abajeno.

We used to live down the street from this hole in the wall Mexican joint and used to walk here. Definately a lot of locals here. You go in, get in line, get a tray, and order cafeteria style. I like the beef burrito. You can tell them what to put in it. I like to get my burritos "wet", which basically means they put the sauce over the whole thing. The burrito is HUGE! Probably as big as Chipotle's.

Been coming here a long time. Best mexican food for the price. The chicken enchiladas are great! The burritos are wonderful. Try the breakfast too, the Chilequiles with chicken are worth every penny. Great tamarindo and jamaica as well. You will not be disapponted. Make sure you say hello to Glen, the security guard in the parking lot too.

Hole in the wall? Yes! This is the place to go if youre hungry and you can chow down! I recommend their combo chicken burrito~ shredded chicken that is in a stew-base that shreds when making your burrito. Their tacos are awesome and their food is overall a great joy to eat. And yes, rumor has it I ate the "A" burrito in one sitting.

  • Nate C.

I love this place. I think this is the best mexican hole in the wall in the US! Yes, I said it. This is very close to the Culver City Projects, maybe that's why it so good b/c of its ghettoness. But yeah, there's no better burrito than El Abajeno's. The combination burrito is filled with rice, beans, and a choice of your meat, and it's all topped with the meat sauce. They give you some chips to eat your burrito with. And you MUST get this with some ice cold Horchata. All this will cost you... around $7. I remember when it was a lot cheaper, but still it's a bargain for the amount of food you get. I remember taking my hispanic friends here and they used to ask me, "how did you find this place when you're not even hispanic?" hahahaha. i guess i just have a nose for good restaurants. There are many good mexican restaurants in LA, but El Abajeno is my all time favorite. =]

The chicken tacos were tasty but they were SOOOO greasy that I just didn't feel well for the rest of the day. I wouldn't go back. I am not a huge fan of Tacomiendo across the street, but I'd still rather go there.

Love this place! First ate here when I was a child some thrity years ago. Great authentic Mexican food like NaNa used to make. I wish I could drag all of my Kansas Taco Bell loving friends to this place and show them what real Mexican food tastes like. The salsa is WOW hot, and the beans are rich and yummy. Totally satisfied with a bean burrito with cheese - something so simple yet so tasty. If you love real Mexican food loaded with calories, grease, and all the good stuff that makes food worth eating, you'll love this place.

Don't come to El Abajeno if you're not hungry! Like this place alot. Inexpensive food, good-sized portions, fast cafeteria style service and one of the better places as far as authentic Mexican food. I usually get the enchilada plate and sometimes the tostada, which are both outstanding, my favorites here. The hard shell tacos are so-so and the hyooge burritos are all right, could be better. The food is very good for the price. Did I mention you won't leave hungry?

hadn't been to this pace in quite some time. in fact, i think this happens to most of us: go to a fave restaurant so often that we eventually end up avoiding it like the plague. anyway, i digress. a couple of weeks back i was making my way to the pico-blvd-mexican-food-restaurant-row when it dawned me; i saw the cursive abajeno witing almost like an apparition of the virgen de guadalupe (except i don't believe in the most revered of mexican saints). so i tell my trusting companion about abajeno and how good the food is and how i went w/the familia when i was living in the 'wood and how i had forgotten about it. so, off we went. it was sunday am (memorial day weekend) so i must have been hating from the night b/4 (just the way it is, people!). thus, the prerequisite small menudo followed by chilaquiles. yum and yum. this past weekend (it was like deja vu all over again) and i find myself at abajeno (after a small w&b sesssion - i'd gone to galaxy gallery on melrose for some necessities on saturday am). BIG mistake; i wanted to eat friggin' everything. i must've changed my order at least three X. i finally settled for some chorizo and eggs and the biggest carnitas tacos this side of the mississippi. the chorizo went down first; then i took the taco apart and separated equal parts carnitas, avocado and queso to make two identical tacos seeing as to how i'm not double-hinged at the jaw. friggin' hey, man. what a meal. couldn't believe i munched it all down (wonder why?). by the by, i bought a lg pozole to go. guess that trip to galaxy may have played a role in the process. later that night, i used my super microondas skills and heated up the pozole. gone...all gone. what a foodfest i had. unbelieveable glutton i must be. dont worry, i prayed for forgiveness b/4 i went night-night. i must warn y'all that abajeno is cafeteria style. no waitpersons. just get in line and order, sit your ass down and chow down, baby! oh, and sometimes there aren't enough tables 'cause there's only, like, one busboy. but, unless you're too cool for your own good, every now and again, just gotta give up some niceties for the greatness of good food. at a price that will leave you w/warm and fuzzy feeling all over. or like you want to sleep for the rest of the afternoon.

El Abajeno's is the best cheap, good Mexican food eats in Culver City. When I worked in Culver CIty, my co-workers and I would shout out in glee..."El Abajenos... Oh-El Abajeno's!"Let's do El Abajeno's for lunch!!! All six of us, diverse in race, color and creed would all bound together for El Abajeno's. The studio staff would go crazy for El Abajeno's for lunch. Upon receiving our lunch orders, we'd all respond to each other, "What did you get?" "Damn! Your meal looks good. It's huge!" "You gonna finish that?!" It was a wonderful time and damn those Mexican meals were good. My co-workers and I would all sit together in the break room, admiring each others El Abajeno meal. Man, did we all look forward to El Abajeno's? I would some times order the bean and cheese burritos, which for $3 was this enormous 3 inch wide, six inch long wet burritos packed with bean and cheese, and topped with salsa roja and melted cheese. I could never finish this enormous burrito. I always ate half, shared my burrito with a co-worker, or ate the rest later. But to rip into this divine burrito oozing with melted cheese, and to taste it was satisfying. My co-workers with their tacos and taquito orders would always enter a food coma after eating here. It was hardy Mexican, but damn was it good. Next time I'm in Culver City, I'm stopping in to El Abajeno's. I miss it.

AMAZING! From the moment I walked in, I loved this place. It shares an entrance with a liquor/convenience store which kind of threw me off when I first got there but once I entered the restaurant, I was surrounded by an authentic feeling Mexican atmosphere. The music playing was fun, classic Mexican music. The menu has a great amount of selection and almost everything on it sounded delicious. I got a chicken, bean, rice, and cheese burrito for ONLY $4.30!!!! HOLY ----!!!!! And it was HUUUGE! I have only seen a couple other burritos as large as the one that I got. And boy oh boy was it yummy! My tummy was singing and dancing once I was done with my food. I got my food to go but the interior of the restaurant was wonderfully decorated and super clean. I would not have minded eating at the restaurant at all. Overall, El Abajeno is DEFINITELY worth coming to eat at. I'd even consider travelling from Claremont to eat here! (that's a 1 hr drive...) I recommend this place to anyone who wants GREAT QUALITY Mexican food for next to nothing cost-wise.

When your Mexican friends recommend a Mexican restaurant you should listen. I have liked everything that I have tried here so far. They have a specialty burrito that is so large it is overflowing from your plate. It has to be between 18-24 inches long and over 6 inches wide. Very delicious too. The enchiladas are very good and sometimes they'll have a handwritten not near the cash register notifying you about their corn tamales. If you see that note, do yourself a favor and get a couple. They are really great. I need to go here more often so that I have more to say but I was really impressed by this place. Another one of those great hole in the walls that you would just drive by without ever noticing it unless someone recommended it.

i loooove El Abajeño. i've been coming here for years, and i love their food. once in a while when we cant find a quick answer to "what do u feel like eating???," El Abajeño pops in my mind, and saves the day. i love the carnitas taquitos, but i had to take a star off because lately i've notice that they've started to make their taquitos smaller and smaller. what was once a promising bulging little tortilla filled with meat and cheese and avocado turned into a disappointment. The last time i went there was hardly any cheese in there and waaay less meat then i remember from a few years ago. What's the deal? anyhoo, its still good from time to time, but not as often as before. oh, and get the meat sauce! yum yum!!

A hole in the wall with dirt cheap Mexican food. It suffices for a quick lunch but it does get a loyal crowd. While I don't consider the food stellar, it certainly suffices and is an improvement over some of the fast food joints in the area. Parking can be a pain, but other than that, a decent alternative to McDonald's or Burger King.

the chicken enchilada was good & cheesy. also be sure to try the carnitas taquitos. it's not rolled up like you'd expect a normal taquito to be. it's more like a taco, and it has an avocado slice on top. i wish i had gotten that, but i had to eat what was left on my boyfriend's plate.

we live in the neighborhood so i been going there since i was 10 years old when it was a take out window in vics market next to sadis liquor store. everyone i know loves the 2 tortilla greasy taquitos with carnitas , hot sauce , slice of fresh avocado, and cheese wrapped in tin foil. they are the best. or the super tostada stacked high if you eat it there. or my buddy loves the huge abajeno burrito ,with everything in it. the soup with beef and vegetables in it is great too ,for a cold. or on a cold day or nite. great grub ,at decent prices.

I eat out often and, though my taste in foods is eclectic, Mexican food is at the top of my choices. I'm 63 years old, and I've tried most of the Mexican restaurants in the Los Angeles area ... and we're lucky to have some great ones ... but I've been a consistent customer here for 40+ years. Shame on the folks leaving comments complaining about lard. The food here is not overly "lardy", and WTF ... it's Mexican food! There is nothing wrong with lard (go read Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon!) Lard IS flavor and if you don't dig lard, then why are you considering Mexican food??? ALL the food at El Abajeño is great. If you dine out, you must have experienced a time or two when you left a restaurant saying to yourself, "This time wasn't quite as good as a previous time." My daughter and I always remark that El Abajeño has never, ever let us down ... it's always good. Yeah, their "taquitos" are awesome, but so is everthing else. Their signature, huge, namesake burrito looks like a rolled-up sleeping bag, and it's delicious (bring two friends to help eat it). Their portions are BIG, but not to make up for any lack of quality or flavor. Big tostadas (choice of meats) can easily fill up two hungry people ... as can the nachos (they layer the cheese and other ingredients throughout the chips, not just on top. They have a variety of great soups ... the Cocido is awesome. A line of folks waiting to get to the food (cafeteris style) counter and seats and tables filled can be considered a sign of a good restaurant (except in the very unique case of Tito's Tacos ... that's in phenomenon with no explanation). The employees are friendly, generous and helpful. This is a place you can bring your out-of-town guests and always be confident that they'll be impressed. I would not even begin to nail down a favorite. You really cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. If you have a particular Mexican food favorite, then try it here. You will become a convert. AMEN .. !! PS: If you see my mug in there, I'll buy the second and third beers if you'll buy the first!

amazing real deal mexican, the burrito was the "el abajeno burrito that is" biggest thing I have ever seen, the tacos and the taquitos are just like a taco stand in mexico- well worth the trip!!! For thos of you from santa barbara, this burrito beats freebirds!!

Have been going to this place since it first opened. You use to order from the liquor store through a little window. Last time I was there was for my husbands birthday party. I had finished my meal and was eating the chunky guacamole when something tasted a little funny, kinda like spearment. It turns out there was a chewed up piece of gum in the guacamole. When we told them they offered no apologies at all. So I proceeded to tell everyone in line about what had just happened. When I got through half of the line (and the lines are long) one of the workers came out with a refund. To little to late. So all you YELPERS, I know the food is good but eat at YOUR OWN RISK!

the food is soooo yummy! but they dont wear gloves while touching & preparing your food. someone put something on the wrong plate then scooped it back into the container once they saw the mistake they made, that's also unsanitary. also the girl on the front line didnt speak english which is fine but she didn't convey that and had a really, really bad attitude.

This place used to be my favorite as a child and teen. I drove 50 miles today to a memory long lost. The food was cold, tortillas were awful. I ordered the carnitas plate it was sooooo dry. I took my parents and they said the same thing. Please bring back the taste of goodness! I will go back in a month in hopes things change.

This is real Mexican food. As good as it gets. I have been coming here since I was child. Their beans are the most delicious and the meat sauce is sinfully delicious and needs to be put on everything. A few highlights are beans and cheese burrito with meat sauce, carnitas taquitos (more like soft tacos), crunch chicken tacos, and the super tostada. Pay for an extra side (or 5) of meat sauce. Any length of line/wait is worth it. You will not regret coming here. Unless you're on a diet of any kind. In which case, you will.

I've been coming here for a few months now and I gotta admit, being of Mexican decent, there are far more better choices for Mexican cuisine elsewhere but my review falls short of 4 stars just because of the fact that I am a huge fan of their home made soft shell tacos of carnitas with cheese and a slice of avocado! Yep! Definitely only come back for that! The rest of the items are limited with either too much water due to the salsa or the re-fried beans can sometimes taste canned and limited dry rice that doesn't taste fresh. Also, I had the chance to try their seafood plates and it wasn't too fresh and dry because it was over cooked. So people who do not care about their daily carb intake can be more than welcomed to come and take over the "El Albajeño" Challenge!

This place has really good enchiladas (one of my favs)!! I love smaller restaurants like this because they are family owned. if you are in the area looking for a quaint little place for some Mexican food, this is definitely the place to go! You won't be disappointed!!

This place is the TRUTH! Been on the hunt for a decent chile relleño burrito since moving to the Westside and THIS IS IT! Super flavorful, tasted fresh and was ready fast. So stoked to find this place in our 'hood! After ordering our food and waiting for it to be made, another customer who was waiting next to us was told us about their amazing taquitos ("unlike anything I've ever had anywhere," he said) and I'm looking forward to going back to give 'em a shot. Chile relleño FTW!

I don't know what Joy and her friends ate (the review below mine, also from today), but 3 hours after my lunch all I can think about is how much I need another round of horchata and that I've found my new Mexican spot. I went based on a recommendation from a friend who grew up nearby and has been going there for years - legit, old school Mexican food. My shrimp cocktail was HUGE, delicious, fresh and the perfect kind of spicy. The guacamole was small, but ended up being the perfect amount because the cocktail was so big - plus it was only $2. It was also delicious and came with hot, fresh chips. I think this is our new company Friday hang.

I rarely write reviews for lack of quality of taste on food because usually I avoid those by the help of Yelp. When you're hungry and craving Mexican food especially since it's convenient to your workplace, you can make regrettable choices. Damn it, I sure did! Cons: 1. The Food Made Me Nauseous Sorry, even my loyal Mexican co workers agreed that their meal made them feel sick. I think it's the oil they use in their food. 2. Lack of Taste We ordered shrimp ceviche, quesadillas, chips and guacamole. Family style, but we were all disappointed. It was mostly oily and bland. Don't be fooled by the photos of the QUANTITY in size of the burritos and tacos. Find another Mexican place for quality and quantity! For now, it's called El Abanjo.

Major tip...if ur in a rush, call ur order in because it gets super busy and crowded fast. If u manage to get ur order and a seat, buy a lottery ticket bc it's yo lucky day. Fave orders: Carnitas (pork) Taquito with mozzarella and avocado. Don't order more that 2 bc they are giant! And deff put that fire on it (house salsa). Not fried. Abajeno nachos with Chile Colorado and everything. But only order if you eat there bc they get soggy in like 5mins. So Bombdiggitty. Wish they delivered or took orders at Eat24 =''(

The hubs and I were starving and our tire pressure light turned on (in our two day old car) so we had to pull over in Culver City to get some air in it. We were dying for Mexican food and we yelped this place. My husband ordered the El Abajeno Asada burrito. It was the biggest burrito I've ever seen. It was held together by two giant flour tortillas. I'm shocked Adam from Man vs Food hasn't been in here yet... Overall it was "good" but he wouldn't order it again... Bigger isn't "always" better... Which I have never heard him say btw... I got a cheese enchilada and substituted the beef taco for carnitas. The cheese enchilada was pretty good. The carnitas was very average. The chips are good but the salsa bar was lacking. I did like the refried beans a lot. Rice was average as well.

Love supporting local and ethnic in the neighborhood. Food is terrific though kind of blunt- big portions, no shortage of ingredients. The burrito is ridiculous if you're thinking of "hand held" food to go! It's MASSIVE, sloppy and quite a value though tasty!

Showing El Ab some extra love. I've gotten the hang of it now, Burritos amigo. This is not a taco shop. Those stewing meats are made for Burritos. Anyway from $5 beef, pork and I tried chicken tonight, a healthy well tenderized option.

El Abajeño has a variety of authentic Mexican choices at a good bargain, and they consistently serve up decent, satisfying meals. One thing I'll have to say right off the bat is their Abajeño burrito is ginormous! Ok, I'm not a big eater but I was hungry and figured I'd polish a good chunk of their large burrito, but it was enough for 4 meals! Seriously, it's really big, like Man vs Food big. As for the rest of the food, it's all very affordably priced and delicious. Very authentic as far as I know, with choices of beef, pork, chicken, and other meats. You order your food cafeteria style up front then bring it to your table. They have a fresh salsa bar which you can help yourself -- it's good, not too spicy and a few levels of spiciness to choose from. They have the regular staples and some I've never heard of. I've tried the enchiladas, tacos, and burritos; they're all really good and taste very fresh. It's really a treat to go here if you're in the mood for Mexican, plus it won't cost that much at all.

I was raised in So Cal and as a native it may surprise few that my favorite cuisine is Mexican. So when I get the occasional craving for a particular dish, I prefer to hit a more authentic spot than say Chipotle (which is cool in a pinch, but sometimes cravings are very particular). I came upon El Abajeño during a burrito craving and opted for the largest burrito I could find. I apologize for not being able to recall exactly what it was called on the menu, but it was a big dude that could not be contained by merely one tortilla. And when I was craving an authentic burrito that was larger than life, El Abajeño delivered. It was an order and pick up kind of place. Parking was easy, there was plenty of seating and I felt pretty confident I was in an authentic place. I would definitely return should another craving take hold.

My stomach felt so bad after eating here. It was definitely cheap Mexican food which my stomach apparently cannot tolerate. I tried the vegetarian tostada which tasted fine although the tostada shell is really just chips and the whole things consists of iceberg lettuce with cheese and enchilada sauce on top. Also tried the guacamole which is way watery and has a weird taste and consistency. It was quick to order and cheap but not great quality.

  • Robyn H.

Best Mexican I've ever had. It is super casual. No atmosphere. If you want good food come here. If you're a snob go some where else. My husband always orders the super tostada. It is so huge. Their carnitas taquitos (soft tacos) are the best. They aren't the rolled fried tacos we normally think of. My daughter gets the pasole. It is to die for. The only down side on her 7 yr old head is there is too much meat. I never cared for pasole until trying theirs. Btw- their "salsa bar" isn't a bar at all. It simply a cart to get salsa. Take it for what it is. Yummy food.

Great Mexican food on the west side. Everything I've eaten here has been good. Both the prices and portions are decent. Try the veggie burrito or tosada and the ceviche.

One of our FAVE Mexican food places of all time!!!!!!!!!! I am drooling just thinking about their "taquitos" which are really more like giant, DELICIOUS tacos! LOVE their nachos too. And their burritos are to die for. Just awesome food. Every family member or friend we take there remembers the food years later. No lie.

Best hard shell taco in Los Angeles. Portions are huge and very inexpensive for the amount of food you get. Quality is top notch. Get there early on the weekends bc the place fills up. Oh and salsa bar is pretty ridiculous. On the weekends it's set up for menudo.

Meh....not exactly horrible, but definitely not a place I would go back to again. I was craving some warm food last night, and I didn't want to wait 2 hours for Gaby's to deliver. So I walked a quick 6 minutes to this place to get a bean and rice burrito. I'm a vegan, so I assumed that no animal products would be added to a rice and bean burrito. I was wrong! I knew something tasted funny about the beans. Should've asked. I see another reviewer wrote they use lard! UGH! No wonder I felt so heavy and groggy after eating it. When the person helping me asked if I wanted it wet, I assumed they had some type of green sauce so I accepted. Nope! He simply used some red type of sauce from a pasole dish or something. I didn't notice this until I got home, but the red sauce had little slithers of meat on top.... Ugh...again. I peeled off the top of the burrito and proceeded to eat the overcooked rice and beans. Rice should be fluffy and soft, not mushy. At least they give you house chips and salsa which were damned good, but probably cooked in lard as well. After overcooked rice and mushy beans, "red sauce", and indigestion, I won't be returning.

I've been coming here since I was a little kid! Years later the food still has the same great taste! The BEST Mexican food around (well second best after my mom's cooking :P)! Try the super tostada or taquitos de carnitas!

  • Leslie E.

This really is your low level basic Mexican food. Nothing had much taste. Even the guacamole was weird and watery. But then with my carne asada I had some decent guacamole but so little I could barely taste it. The carne was okay but very very salty. My wife's chicken tacos were not much better than Tito's. That's not very good. We both grew up in this town and we know Mexican food. There's much better out there. Very nice people and a decent place, but no table service so you'll be eating off of a tray. I wish them well but: We will not be coming back. A terrific alternative is not very far away down on Centinella and. Sepulvida Boulevard. VIVA FRESH. They make some of the best guacamole I've ever had, some excellent burritos and the usual, plus great seafood at a reasonable price. Just try it & you'll see.

My go to lunch joint when out of timers want to try "real" Mexican food. I love the Fiesta Plate which offers a sample of 3 different Chilie. There tacos are also super good and the asada is very very flavorful. Staff is friendly and the restaurant is relatively clean. Prices average about $8 for an entree. If you want cheap try Sanchez's stand next door.

Delicious. You line up to order food and pay, and then bring your food on a tray back to a table. Everything looks so good. Burritos, tacos (including hard shell), and soups are great. Nice salsa bar. Great neighborhood Mexican restaurant.

The one menu item here that I get is Carnitas Taquitos. These are Delish!! I'm not a fan of stewed meat burritos and the other stuff they offer however if you enjoy awesome carnitas, try these. Thanks!

A hole in the wall place that I hope doesn't gain TOO much popularity in the future as the lines are already long enough as is. I'm picky when it comes to my menudo because I can taste when they didn't clean the tripe well enough. This place has legit delicious menudo that I'd have to venture to East LA to get! I love that it's on the westside and is pretty much no frills, authentic, Mexican cuisine. A great spot to hit when you're hungover too...

Great neighborhood Mexican food. The place is bigger inside than it appears from the street. Casual atmosphere, order at the counter, get your food and find a table. Nothing fancy, just good food.

Honestly, I read through the reviews and decided to try this restaurant for ourselves but I have to agree with those who said the food was rather bland. ALSO, all three of us were sick for three days afterwards. SO, I'm sorry to those of you who love this place, we won't be back ... the food was ok, the portions were huge, and if nobody else had mentioned getting sick, I might have overlooked it but it's obvious there's something not quite right here!

Great Authentic Mexican Food. If you dont mind the wait the food is great. The gorditas reminds me of my mom's cooking. I have been coming to this restaurant for more then 8 years and is still the same great food.

How does anyone go here and not get a carnitas taquito? Can't compare them to anything. I've been eating here since I was a kid. I also love the bean and cheese burritos with meat sauce. This place has the same nostalgia factor for me as Tito's. They are both delicious in their own way. I remember, as a child, being so excited after my meal to go to the liquor store that's in the same building and get some Mexican candy and trick gum that I could shock my friends with. The place seems authentic. I'm white I Don't really know what authentic Mexican food is. It's set up kind of cafeteria style. Which, in my opinion, works with Mexican slow cooking like carnitas, machaca etc. I don't think there is anything on the menu that isn't cooked to perfection. They always have a security guard in the parking lot that is really nice. Lol. You can take that as a good or bad thing I guess. Remember, you don't go to The Griddle for a hamburger. You go for a pancake. When you go to El Abajeno you're not going for the ambiance, you're going for a carnitas taquito or a giant burrito. They have messed up my order once or twice, wasn't a big deal and they fixed it. They barley speak English most of the time so I wouldn't try calling in an order... They never disappoint and are very consistent. If I'm in the area it's either here or Titos for me. Depends on what I'm in the mood for.

I gave this place a second chance today because I forgot how terribly disgusting they are. Its probably the worst mexican food I have ever had. chips suck, salsa sucks, the rice was dry and the food is just gross... The resturaunts ambiance is cute though, and its nice that its family owned but seriously what hole in the wall mexcan joint isn't? I am so confused as to why people give this place such good ratings, is it because they have been patrons since the place opened in 1969 and go just for old time sake, because its cheap, and are so old that they dont have tastebuds anymore. seriously YUCK!!! I wont be back, nor will I recomend to friends.

I frequent this place and it's been solid everytime. As authentic as you can probably get. The gordita shell is warm and crunchy, the burritos are large and filling, and the sopitas are tasty! They staff here are really friendly as well. Although, I do wish they would use gloves everytime when making food that requires them to touch it. I don't always trust that people wash their hands thoroughly...

I've been visiting El Abajeno for 15 years or more. It's an old school, neighborhood and authentic mexican restaurant. I love the hard shell tacos with rice. I always ask to add beef sauce to the rice, because it can be quite dry. The soft shell tacos include a slice of avocado. There's plenty of seating and you order the food cafeteria style, and then take the tray of food to a table. If's a neat place to go occasionally for lunch or dinner.

There are few places I trust when it comes to menudo because almost nothing can beat abuelita's, BUT this is definitely the place my family and I come to on those Sunday mornings that ACTUALLY COMPARES to abuelita's cooking. The menudo is fantastic and if you bring in a huge pot or olla, they'll fill it up. PERFECT. But not only is their menudo good, their tortas are phenomenal (I think its the bread they use, its just like YESSSSSS), their tostadas are filling and their tacos are delicious! My family and I always get the chicken tacos and two or three of those and we're full! It's homey, delicious, and decently priced.

My friend and I both ordered breakfast burritos with eggs, beans, avocado, lettuce, tomato to go. They charged EACH of us $9.32, I thought there was a mistake...nope, they said it was a vegetarian burrito with eggs as an additional cost. The burrito was standard Mexican like you could get off any restaurant or truck in LA with no frills. If anything it should have been cheaper because there was no meat. It was poorly wrapped so everything fell out. Wow...over-priced and poorly executed...winning combination! For $9.32 I should get some gourmet burrito where they grow the ingredients in the back, hand make the tortillas and raise chickens that lay eggs. Instead I got lard beans, iceberg lettuce, unripened tomatoes, and a mess. Not a fan, next time I will go to any other Mexican truck in LA and find something that is better for a fraction of the price.

  • Kyle O.

Way overrated. Food is all premade sitting out roasting in hot pans. Meats were all greasy and soggy, destroying tortillas and dripping all over. Veggies were bland and overcooked. Tortillas were stale. Staff was too busy texting and on Facebook. Bathroom key was disgustingly dirty (the guy that handed it to us also touched our food and money with no globes or washing). Bathroom was scummy and smelly. And it was expensive. Parking was the only plus and the salsa verde was good. Not returning. We had basics too like tacos and burritos and Chile Colorado which are hard to mess up.

My husband has been coming here since he was a kid. Now we drive from San Diego several times a year just for their delicious taquitos. We always take food to go too for my MIL. It is the best Mexican food in SoCal!! Hands down.

  • Mister E.

Yes, the carnitas taquitos are very good. However, everything else I tried at El Abajeno was extremely disappointing. The chips tasted of old cooking oil. The rice tasted like burned rice from the bottom of the pan. But the most disgusting item was the chile relleno. The appearance should have been enough of a warning not to try it: limp and swimming in grease. But I soldiered through one bite...and quickly spat it out. Grease, grease and more grease. Positively revolting.

What can I say? El Abajeño makes one of THE most authentic Mexican foods in my neighborhood. The location of this place is on Inglewood Blvd. at Culver Blvd. in Culver City It's a hole-in-the-wall spot, so that must mean this place is good? YES IT IS! I love coming here and ordering their Chicken El Abajeño burrito. It's tremendously HUGE! One burrito can seriously feed a family of 4! Its stuffed with stewed chicken, spanish rice, pinto beans, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, avocado, red onions, and folded into this big pillow of goodness! They also have lunch and dinner combination plates. You can mix and match all different types of entrees from tacos and tamales to enchiladas and more. My favorite is the shrimp cocktail. Nice and light. Refreshing to have at anytime. I like to spice mines up with tabasco sauce and freshly squeezed lime juice...SO GOOD! The people that work here are friendly. Speedy service. Prices are affordable. Truly one of the hidden gems of Culver City.

Nothing out of this world great here, but it's a perfect spot if you are looking for a cheap Mexican joint, that's pretty dang tasty! It's an assembly line ordering system, that's is made right I front of you when you order. We got 2 burritos, and I wish I had ordered a tostada. The guy behind me got one, and it looked great! They seem to have a pretty great set up for to-go orders as well.

  • Bethany K.

Assuming you eat meat... Just get the carnitas taquitos. Do it. They're ~$3 each but are STUFFED -- you don't need more than 2 or 3... though you may wish you had ordered more. LOVE their chips + salsas and GREAT horchata. A super, super short review but that's all you need to know! (Okay, fine, a tiny bit of logistics--they have a decent sized parking spot and you can also find street parking. The area around feels a little tiny sketch but that's because we came by kind of late and night and weren't familiar with the area. You can also order over the phone and it'll be more or less ready for you when you get there!)

Can't say enough.. Great food! Always fresh. Parking sucks... But worth the wait and searching. Salsa bar is always stocked. Helps if you speak Spanish . I recommend the wet burrito. The line always looks long , but the staff moves it along .

Second time here. Food had no flavor and was haphazardly thrown together. Got the quesadilla, chicken enchiladas, tostada salad, and fiesta plate. Veggies weren't fresh and meat needed seasoning. Salad was laid on top of chips and not a tostada shell. Pretty disappointed. One of the worst meals I've had in awhile. Best part of the meal was the coke.

The bf and I stopped here after our trip to a local Museum. I searched Yelp for some good, cheap Mexican food, and we settled on this place. The line was long and it took about 20 mins to get to the ordering. It's kinda like cafeteria style, you get your food by the end of the line. At first glance the place seems pretty nice and decent, with somewhat updated looking decor. But the place where they keep the food did not look clean. It looked like they probably only clean it at closing each day, and we had the whole day drizzled around. I got the bean, rice, and chicken burrito, and the bf got the carne asada burrito. Both came with chips. The salsa bar was equally messy as the food, and the salsa wasn't even spicy. Luckily they had limes for our beers! I thought my burrito was decent, except for the bones. Oh right, it says on the menu that anything with meat might contain bones. I kinda thought it was a joke until I was chomping on bones!! So that was weird. I wasn't a big fan of the chicken, it was a bit soggy for my tastes. BF felt about as excited about his burrito as I was about mine. Lucky for him, no bones. I didn't straight up hate anything, but I probably wont be eating here again.

Best mexican food in LA, hands down. I've been eating here since I was a kid, and after trying about a zillion mexican food joints from SD to SF, this is still my absolute favorite. My go-to choices are the carnitas taquitos, crunchy beef tacos, cheese enchiladas, and bean/rice/cheese burritos. YUMMMtastic.

Hubby and I came here after leaving a touristy taco place with a man's name in title. OMG... These were sooo much better. We had the beef tacos. The shells were freshly fried to order, and the beef was well made and also seemed freshly made. They were topped with fresh lettuce and Mexican cheese - not American cheddar. I even liked the refried beans that I stole off hubby's plate. I normally HATE refied beans, but liked these. Again, they were fresh. Too often I get the impression that the refried beans are just a never ending pot that are added to day after day. I did not get that impression here. These beans were not the normal pasty flop that I usually experience. Anyway, I am bookmarking so I can come back. I give it 4 stars versus 5 because hubby said he wants a more seasoning in meat and a menu with translations would have been nice.

Please see my related review of Lost & Found, I feel these two are a great combo together. Anyhow, El Abajeno is legit. It was recommended to me by the owner of Lost & Found, and it sure didn't disappoint. You wait in a line to order up your entree, and really everything here is delicious. I got the chicken (hard shell) taco + cheese enchilada platter while my friend got one of their monstrous burritos. Apparently the shrimp diablo is awesome here, but I haven't tried it personally. The vibe is super casual, the portions are huge and cheap, and the food is homestyle Mexican and DAMN GOOD. I wish they were open till 4am. That would be perfection. But I will happily take it as it is.

Before coming in, I didn't know that the establishment was a line order style. Luckily, we came at an hour when it wasn't so busy (the line hadn't reached the door yet). I ordered a carnitas burrito and m'lady ordered a tostada salad. Both were huge! While tasty, I would say that the only impressive thing about this place was the portions. There is a lot of great Mexican in the area, especially with shorter waits.

As a child going to school across the street I never got into it for I was brainwashed that Tito's was the place to go.That was 40 years ago. SCREW Tito's. This place, may also have long lines, hands down is 10 times better than the iconic (sic) place a few miles away. The variety far outweighs the 20 minutes, and thhey sell aguas frescas too. I no longer go to Tito;s and I suggest the same to anyone who thinks Tito's is the bomb. Anyone who give El Abajeno less than 3 stars is either an employee of Tito's or just plain dumbass

I've been coming here since I can remember. The food is delicious, authenic, and fairly priced. I almost always get the carnitas taquitos which are sooooooo good. The tortilla is nice and greasy and the meat is so moist and flavorful. Topped with lots of cheese and a slice of avocado, best thing ever. The salsa bar is always fresh and very good. The sopa de res is delicous as well. Awesome liquor store with Mexican candy store next door too! Definitely a spot to check out.

Yes, the burritos are substantial and a lot of people love that aspect of certain burritos. However, if it is filled with mainly rice and beans and the meat is an afterthought, then I don't see the point. I had the carne asada super burrito and the meat was bland and hard to find in the burrito. I also had the carnitas taquito. Carnitas is my absolute meat of choice and I found this to be extremely bland. Luckily they have a good salsa bar, because that is the only thing that saved this meal.

At first I was turned off by the line, not knowing that its cafeteria style, but by time I got to the front of the line I already had my food. Bravo! It was a hot day! And seeing all of the cabesa sized burritos, I chose to order light - shrimp cocktail, small. This cocktail, while small, was brimming with shrimp. I could barely finish it. And when I was through I didn't feel like taking a nap or throwing up; which is always one of two outcomes when I eat Mexican food. I would order this again on a hot day.

carnitas taquitos. these are not deep fried. the tortillas are flipped in oil. then a generous amount of tasty shredded carnitas. melted cheese and a nice slice of avocado. good prices

Came here off of a recommendation! I was a little put off by the cafeteria counter, but was pleasantly surprised that they had pozole. The portions were great and loved all the cabbage and condiments offered at the salsa bar. THe downside was the "not so fresh" shrimp ceviche that went to waste. I took a little bite and was not pleased at all. I will go back and will stick with the pozole and nachos my friend ordered.

Confession to make...If I had my dream cafeteria in high school or college, this is what it would consist of. Home made, stick-to-your-ribs, down-to-earth, delicious Mexican goodness is all this place is about. Not five-star dining, (5 stars on Yelp only :p) not modern decor, not even level tables, just good food cafeteria style. To define cafeteria food, you walk up to a steam table, give your order to someone behind the table, the slap your food together and hand you a ticket, you take your food and ticket to the register and pay, you sit down and eat. Pretty damn simple. The comments about the parking attendant are funny. He's a hard a$$ but he has one job and one job only and he does it well, albeit rudely but he does his job. He is hired by the owner of the property so it's not just El Abajeno that he patrols. Hard to fault El Abajeno for his rudeness but if it's the place that you are headed to and is the only place to park, it's hard not to fault them. Anyway, it's parking. Screw it. Back to the topic at hand...food. I have never had a bad meal here. I've eaten a few different items and always feel like trying something new each time, but it's tough because I always end up going to the my regular items such as Lengua Taquitos or Huevos Rancheros. Good stuff. Messy sloppy home cooked food. That's how to describe the dishes. It's not easy to eat so it's pretty much standard protocol to eat almost everything with a fork minimum. Knife optional. The salsa bar is minimal but decent. Nothing that blows your taste buds out with too much spice but the flavor is definitely there. Simple and good. Don't go there on weekends unless it's off hours from brunch, lunch, or dinner. It gets crowded. We're talking lines out the door and no seating at all. To me, that's how you tell a restaurant is good. Any place that lines up their customer out the door is surely doing something right. I'm not sure where everybody parks, but that's a moot point. Go where the crowd is. Lots of police too so that's another good sign at any restaurant. The taquitos are a must try (not the deep fried taquitos you are used to. these are the soft tacos on corn tortillas). Very generous portions of carnitas (meat) on every taco. I like the lengua personally. Huevos rancheros are also very good. The sauce they use is just tasty and homey. Honorable mentions go to the lengua in green sauce plate, the beef and bean burrito (sauce on top please), and the gorditas. Check it out. Seriously. Don't let the exterior or interior scare you off. It's good food made with love. Spanish is always a plus when ordering but not at all necessary. During the week, go before the lunch rush if you can. There's parking next to the restaurant but there is also street parking that's not too far away. Face it, we can use the walk after a meal from El Abajeno.

oh el abajeno, you have won my heart today with your ceviche tostada. it was only $3.30, yet the quality was absolutely insane! great thick 'n crunchy hand made tostada topped with fresh chopped shrimp, onions, & tomatoes. there was a tiny cup of hot sauce, sliced lemons, and a handful of equally thick & crunchy tacos on the side too. it was simple, yet delicious. the gortida ($3.40) and the sope ($1.99) are their handmade specialty on their menu here, and they were so yummy too. i really recommend this little hole in the wall!

What can say? A gem amongst gems? A diamond in the rough? If this place were on American Idol it would be cutting an album by now! I was told through a reliable westside source this place was 'it' on the westside. That local was not lying by any stretch. Clean, qauint, authentic, excellent service and the taquitos were insane. Baby I can eat but I couldn't finish this carnitas taquito, rice and bean plate. I can't even accurately describe how delicioso it was. I ate there last night and still don't wanna brush my teeth so I don't lose the flavor in my mouth. I know, I know gross LOL but honest! I thought I was in TJ man! My friend Fi Fi had the huevos rancheros and she is a Mexican food officiando. She said it was SOOOO good that she even ditched me today to go back on her way home from work! True story! WTF this joint is stealing my friends! You go girl! When we were there we saw a burrito so big we wondered what they had left to serve us. The two homeboys eating this monstrosity ate it like they were going to the electric chair. The gaucamole and chips were right on man! Even the salsa bar wsa filled wiith far above average salsa. If no one was looking I would have stole some for home but the attentiveness of the staff made me nervous LOL. great folks and they know their stuff. Hit El Abajeno up asap and If you miss this spot it's on you brother. The line will just be shorter without you there so your loss is my gain.

This place is a local institution. My dad used to go here for lunch! Cafeteria style, so grab a tray. I haven't had anything I don't like. The meat sauce is definitely amazing, ask for some of it if they don't give you any with your order. The line can get pretty long, don't be surprised if you have to wait 15 mins or more for fri/sat dinner.

The beans, rice, and tortilla are all really good. The chicken with beans and rice burrito is very delicious and not too filling. The carne asada meat, however, is kind of chewy and dry. Just stick to the chicken burrito.

This little restaurant has been around for decades and I have been going here since I was a teenager. It's a good inexpensive place to eat. They are famous for their giant burritos. (A family of four could live in one.) Their signature dish is their carnitas taquito with avocado and cheese. These are not the fried little hard stick version of a taquito, but a big shredded pork stuffed delight. Ask for one with meat sauce and it is wonderful. Tortas (Mexican style sandwiches) are also yummy here. Chicken enchiladas are full of white meat chicken and covered in melted cheese. Eat in or take out.

Hey, uh, I know I promised you I'd take it slow I know I swore on everything I own But I can't resist, how's just one kiss? But don't look now...at El Abajeno! - Far East Movement (don't look now) Don't look now, this place rocks! After carefully looking at the pretty extensive menu, I ordered the carne asada taquitos that had a (try me!) sign next to it and came in a combo and it was amazing. Food was ready before i was even done paying for the meal and there was soo much food on the plate. Chips, beans, spanish rice and my taquitos (which were really soft tacos but so good. The tortilla flour soaks up alot of the oil of the meets so it does feel sort of unhealthy what you are eating but its so good you won't stop. Easy to get in and out and on your way, good business efficient business model here and everything is relatively cheap. Food: 4.5 stars --- Service: n/a --- Atmosphere: 3 stars --- Price(value): 4 stars

Now here is a fantastic place to eat. The numerous fellow yelpers can vouch on it's greatness. But here I have had the 2nd largest burrito in my life. It's called the Abajeño Burrito, it's like a small baby....a baby dripping with meat sauce and filled with meaty mexican goodness..... (man that's a weird baby).... I guess saying that it weighs as much as a baby would have given the same effect :D All around great speedy service, great food, a small parking lot next door, but it gets BUSY during lunch, so pick your times wisely. A+ all around. I want to go there now.... (brb .... *doorslam!* .....*vroooom vroooooommmmm..........)

Authentic usually quick, best tasting Mexican food in the west Los Angeles area. This is my favorite place to eat. I order wet burritos with chicken, carnitas or beef. All which have a ton of flavor. Must try!

Absolutely delicious! I had a catch up dinner with Thin Mint at this place, since he recently moved to Palms. The orders here are huge and enough for two meals. My abajeño omelet was made just right and came with a generous portion of rice and a warm flour tortilla. Did I mention that it's also hard sometimes to find good Mexican food for dinner when you're craving omelets? This is definitely the place to go! My meal came out to be under $11 with my order of a small soda and I thoroughly enjoyed eating the leftovers the next day! Will try to return when I'm back in the area!

Holy smokes - this place has some of the most authentic Mexican food I've eaten in LA! I was taken here by a friend who says it's the closest to her grandmother's cooking she has found at a restaurant. I had the carnitas taquitos which really weren't the type of taquitos I'm used to (meat inside a rolled-up, fried corn tortilla) but rather more like soft tacos (meat inside a fresh corn tortilla). These were so delicious! The carnitas was so flavorful and they were topped with fresh avocado and cheese - yum! It came with rice, beans and chips on the side. The beans were so delicious that I ate them all with my chips while waiting in line to pay and only had rice left when I got to my seat. We also ordered fresh guacamole which was very good. My friend liked her soup and she let us try it. Pozole, it was very good :) I saw some people behind us in line order burritos and they were enormous, I'll have to try one soon. This is SO my new favorite place for Mexican food in LA! I'll be back very soon!

It's so hard not to give this place a 5, but it's a solid 4.5 stars and I'm one of those people that likes to round down...hehe Anyway, since my original review I've been to this place 4 more times so obviously I like it A LOT. I'm still sticking to the chicken taquitos and chicken tacos dorado style. The horchata is fab. I like the ambiance, especially when you go during non-rush hour (pretty much anytime after 1:30-2. I still don't like how the tortillas in my taquito get soggy so fast, but I've learned to open up the aluminum foil wrapping as soon as I get the taco in my little hands to minimize wetness. I wish they had a more mild or chunky salsa as well for all those good chips they give you. The service is ok - they're not friendly, but definitely quick and decent.

Thank you Yelpers! You didn't lead me astray! This place was awesome. Cafeteria style dining where you line up to get your food, pay, then find your seat. They have a salsa bar where you can choose from a number of different types. I had the Carnitas Taquito Dinner. Yummy. Can't go wrong with that option. They have an extensive menu to choose from so go buck wild. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Also, the staff are really friendly and helpful.

Ok, lets start from what I'd definetely get here again - carnitas taquitos and quesadilla with steak were delicious, but we almost didn't touch the burrito. It was humongous, sloppy, had a lot of rice... The spot is really cheap, so why I rate it with 3 stars. I'm kind of person that like the place do be clean and not stinky. This one had dirty tables and really bed smell especially if you go towards restrooms. May be because it is crowded or may be the cleaning is not enough, but anyway this is it. Oh, and be ready to stay in a long line (~25-30 min)

First ate here as a local of Del Rey in the 80's. Either my taste has radically changed or they have or both. I have and still enjoy eating in the sketchiest of places both her and abroad. Due to my profession I have been lucky enough to travel to very exotic places, some third world and Mexico is one of my favorite foreign countries. This place is lifeless, dank, dirty and a buffet does not have to be manned 9or women-ed) by rude, uncaring dead eyed workers. The food was bad a year ago in that I threw out 2/3rds of a carnitas burrito. How you screw up carnitas is beyond me. its like screwing up bacon. I went back to day and it was worse. My cast iron stomach is doing cartwheels and Its my fault for 1 Going back to a place that I have had bad food and service 2 Eating Pozzole that was luke warm and tasted mealy. I'm not sure what kind meat was in there but it was fatty and not fit for human consumption. No joke, avoid at all costs.Especially when Titos or Pacos is so close and Sanchez is next door. This is coming from a guy , Tommys on Rampart who loves food trucks--and not the new fangles hipster variety...

So I'm back on the West Side in search of some good Mexican food because as most people say it does not exist on the West Side, so I heard about El Abajeno Restaurant Family owned and operated since 1969, wow that quite a few years they must be doing something right. As my Wife and I first walk in you notice a line on the left side with a fairly good size seating area that's about 70% full, So I'm noticing this place is similar to a Cafeteria, you wait in line and check out the LARGE Menu yelp.com/biz_photos/SgS2… until you get to the front, pick up a tray and place your order, they have the different meat's already prepared so basically the Ladies heat up a tortilla and assemble your food yelp.com/biz_photos/SgS2… there are several Ladies so the line moves fast and your order is ready in no time. So my Wife and I decided to share a Burrito and a Taco, we ordered the "El Abajeno Burrito" Pork, you have a choice between Pork/Beef, we ordered it with NO rice or sauce on the top. I saw the menu that it said lettuce & tomato but ASSUMED it would probably be something on the side, NEVER ASSUME!!! the lettuce & tomato was inside the Burrito. So this thing is massive NOT as big as the Manuel's Special but it's a BIG burrito yelp.com/biz_photos/SgS2… I really like the flavors of this burrito but not liking the BIG chunks of lettuce and tomato that's like taco bell! yelp.com/biz_photos/SgS2… but with a good taste. We also shared a Taco just because I had to have a Taco, so I ordered the Carne Asada and it's topped with oinion, tomato & cilantro, I had to pick some of it off before adding some salsa to the top yelp.com/biz_photos/SgS2… I just don't like it when the condiments are chopped so large OR lack of chopping and they overpower the flavor of the meat. So the Burrito was very good the pork and the sauce had an excellent flavor the beans were real nice too, but just don't care for lettuce and tomato inside my Burrito. And the Taco well the Carne Asada had a wonderful grilled flavor perfectly cooked and tender, but the tortillas were strange I can't pin point it but had a strange texture and taste, also the onions, cilantro & tomato spend a little more time and CHOP the things, I really don't like tomato on my taco anyways, but that's my fault for not reading the menu correctly.

Great neighborhood Mexican spot. Authentic and delicious. I love the chicken enchiladas with the beans and rice. I getting hungry just writing this review. Note my palette favors authenticity, so I'm not a fan of Paco's which is a nearby favorite. Service is cafeteria fast food style. It's a family place so it closes early. I also enjoy the breakfast as well. Grades Food: B+ Service: B+ Price Value: A Ambiance: B

Killer carnitas taquitos: heaps of carnitas meat on a small corn tortilla with cheese and avocado. I ordered two ($2.95 each) and it came with a side of chips. I was full after just one taquito... Delicious! Will definitely be back, gracias!

Just want to add, that the last time I came was on a Sunday @ 7pm and it was not crowded at all. Got the tampiqueña (tender top sirloin steak) comes with rice beans and a enchilada ($10.95) *also note that unlike other plates that are pretty much ready on the spot this one takes about 10-15 mins*

I have been coming here my whole life. Service is always fast, food is always tasty & hot. Sundays lines can be crazy long, so I learned to either call in my order for pick up or eat on the off times. #12, carnitas taquitos r my favorite...its simple meat cheese & a slice of avocado with a side a beans & rice. Best ever! Make sure u say hi to chief in the parking lot, he's been there forever. :)

El Abajeno never disappoints whether its breakfast/lunch/dinner. This is a frequent spot with my family and this place is never slow. Its cafeteria style and prices are pretty inexpensive. My sister ordered the huge burrito a few times. You can chow down on some and have a good amount to take home. My fiance order menudo on our last visit and loved it.

The carnitas rolled tacos are to die for! They are not your typically taquito, it's more like a taco. It's two corn tortillas stuffed with the best carnitas around, topped with a thick slice of perfectly ripe avocado. I usually split up my meat and tortilla and turn it into two smaller tacos. Its so worth going there for. The only downside to this place is how stingy they are with their salsa. They need to get over that. Salsa makes people happy.

Excellent Mexican breakfast spot that serves it all day and Pozole over the weekend. You order your food cafeteria style and then select your seating. Chilaquilas with chicken excellent as well. Portions are huge, including the carnitas, so order with that in mind.

first time here following all the fuss..service sucked, staff unfriendly, went along wd carnitas taco plate. food was bland, no flavor whatsoever. hubby ordered carne asada plate medium well..meat was rare and bland as well. salsa bar, disappointed..all salsas lacked flavor..over all food and service was mediocre...dnt understand the long line, maybe my tastebuds are much more developed than most. i do not recommend this place to anyone..u will have a much more tasteful plate done at home by a first time learning cook. but if cafeteria food suits your needs, then this is the place to go to. did i mention my hubby thought he was coming down wd a cold because the food tasted like nothing?.....

As they say in Austin, TX : DAYYUUM! I ordered the Tampiqueno. It's a steak with an enchilada. It's about $12. It's amazing. First, lets talk about the meat part. The steak was a little north of medium well (no pink except in the middle), and being a Texan, I would have put all kinds of bad exclamations against it since I ordered a medium well. But . . . each bite was tender and flavorful, and wow. I can't believe how much of it there was (I took half of it home just because there was so much). Then there was this cheese enchilada that had to have been made with a total block of cheese. I mean, this was the cheese enchilada of cheese enchiladas. I'm gonna have to go TMI here and say this thing probably stopped me up for days there was so much cheese (ok, not true since I know some secret exercises that helps). But it was amazing, and the W (who always reads the menu to order cheese enchilada's) was jealous of my enchilada. She ordered the cheese enchilada's of course. The rice was better than Campos (we're a big fan of campos cause its so nearby), and the refried beans were good (I love me some beans). The W didn't like the guacamole, but I think most other people would. It's a chunk version, so it looks like chunks of avocado rather than a cream. I don't like avocado, so I can't tell you anything about it - but if you're picky about the guac - here's the warning. This is the best place for a cheat day meal. It's got so much bad for you that tastes just oh so good. And they serve beer! We're definitely going again. We like that there are so many diverse people who show up there. And they serve beer!

Go here on my lunch its close to my work. The food is always tasty here. I have tried their enchiladas, carne asada torta and recently a carne asada burrito. I think the best thing i've had so far would be the enchilada plate. Very flavorful sauce, next time i go i think i'm going to have to go with the enchilada plate once again. Salsa is freaking good too and its all located at a salsa bar, ulimited. Dosen't get better than that.

This rating & review is for their burritos : All their burritos have deep flavors, taste better than most others and even the normal ones are huge. For the El Abajeno Burrito you better be starved fro a week or a professional competition eater, it's just huge. Have been here a dozen times and the burritos never disappointed ... and to top it off their are really cheap even though the food is great.

I used to love this place for their cocido de res and pozole until it made me sick... TWICE. Ok, once is fine, I forgive you. But twice? Seriously? I was able to overlook the gross decor and how unsafe I felt whenever I pulled up in their parking lot guarded by a shady security guy. Sadly I will no longer be coming here because I think this place is out to kill me.

This place is pretty good. They have a decent sized parking lot with spaces reserved for restaurant patrons. The inside is comfortable, dark wood booths with great interior that gives an authentic mexican feel. If this place wasn't a "mexican counter," I'd definitely take a girl out on a date here...the interior is that nice. Speaking of which, this is a really nice mexican-counter restaurant, meaning there are no waiters, you just go up to the counter, order your food, and its ready with the quickness. They have EVERYTHING you could want from a mexican restaurant. I'm serious, they have a huge menu with all the essentials and more..including vegetarian options. I opted for taquitos, because of all the recommendations from yelp, and a taco, because come on, I eat tacos..check my reviews. First off, the taquitos were not what I expected them to be. I'm frickin gringo apparently, because I was expecting crunchy, not soft like they served them. They were more like tacos, but bigger and softer tortillas. They come with cheese and avocado. Everything melded really good to give a soft, melty, greasy, goodness. The soft tortillas with the long stewed chicken, the melty cheese, and avocado married well. A big thumbs up. The carne asada taco had an up and a down. The carne itself had a really good grilled/charred flavor with the meat being chewy yet very tender and juicy. The down side was the tortillas were the exact opposite of the taquitos..these were a bit more starchy and I ended up taking off the second tortilla and used only one. I was expecting the tortillas to lose heat quick, from experience, but they kept heat long enough for my last bite to be nice and hot. ps - the prices for the tacos and taquitos are higher than your average street taco, but everything else on the menu is recession friendly. tacos ~ asada/lengua/chicharon - 1.99 taquitos ~ carnitas w/ cheese avocado & sauce - 2.95 pollo, lengua or asada - 3.15

Stopped here for lunch the other day and it was a neat experience. The cafeteria-style tray-and-line setup is a little odd, but the food was very tasty and very reasonably priced. I'm taking way some stars because while the carnitas taquitos were very flavorful they were also soaked in oil, which was a bit off-putting. I know that's largely my fault for ordering the item fried in oil, but there's a line on what is expected, and what is just too much. That being said, you get a bunch of good food for cheap, so I'd probably come back again if I were in the area.

Hola, El Abajeno! You've been around since I was a kid, so you're like an old, good, somewhat greasy, friend to me. You serve a pretty good hard shell chicken taco plate with rice and beans ($8.45) and a pretty darn good beef stew and posole ($6.90 Fri, Sat, Sun only). Your carnitas taquitos ($2.95) are more like huge cheese and avocado laden generous pork soft shell tacos. Greasy goodness, but a bit too greasy for my likes. I get tactile crunch cravings for this every few weeks and my sis and I gotta get our El Ab chix taco fix on. Private parking lot with a nice security guard who has been there for years, too! Adds great stability to a somewhat rocky 'hood. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner served here! Beer only. Adios losangeles.menupages.com…

Did you want "big" with your burrito? Well, here ya go. Here's an extensive menu of authentic-esque comida Mexicana ... of all types. Tortas, tacos, taquitos, platos, burritos, you name it, you got it. And it's all pretty tasty, and it's all pretty clean. And there's a decent salsa bar. You gotta wait in a sometimes long-ass line and order cafeteria style, which is for me a turn-off, but otherwise, you're in for a good deal of good food at a good price. Parking's rather a bitch unless you hit it just right.

I tried the carnitas taquitos, per the other reviews and the chalk sign in the restaurant. I also tried the chicken tacos. The restaurant is more of a cafeteria, where someone spoons a stew of food onto your plate. It happens to be on a tortilla, but my friend and I had to get more napkins (we started with over a dozen) and I wanted to wash my hands immediately and my insides shortly after. The chicken was good and the carnitas was good...but I feel worse for having eaten them. Everything is swimming in lard and cheese and oil. Those things are all tasty in moderation -- but overwhelming when you gulp down whole mottled quarts of them at a time. I am going to edit this review after trying the burrito, per the recommendation of E D F (below). Somehow, though, I have to think that if the contents of the burrito come out of the same vats as the contents of the tacos, I'm not going to add any stars. EDIT Actually, every time I think about going back here, I think, "ugh." So I won't be trying the burrito. Even their guacamole was soupy!

A nice shelter-from-the-sun eating environment, dark and tiled, and comfy homestyle burritos with refried beans and tasty carnitas (or your choice of something else of course). The taquitos are good too and have avocado on them. I'd never had one like that before.

  • Erin L.

Meh, not bad but not great. I ordered the cheese & avocado taquito w/ carnitas (which was double the size of a taco), a carne asada taco, and a lengua taco. I was full after the taquito and one taco so i'd say the portions are great. I really wanted to try the ceviche but I was way too full. I wouldn't mind going back again if I were in the Culver City area... but I'd be much happier sticking with King Taco or El Taurino in terms of taste. However, these guys get 4 stars for good customer service and fair prices :)

What a FUN joint. Last night we did pick-up dinner for a movie night at home. The food was great but next time, we're eating IN. (Notice I didn't say dining...) This place is a great place to meet friends, swill a few beers and have REALLY good Mexican food at slightly more than Taco Bell pricing. At first I was put off by the steamer-tray, pay-at-the-cash-register vibe but dinner was great. I loved my huge carne asada burrito (more like a burron!) and the girls dug their chile colorado and chile relleno, also. Vamos a regresar,

Oh, El Abajeno, how you never disappoint! Among the best home-style Mexican food I've ever eaten in Los Angeles. I've been eating here since breakfast was less than $2...now it's more like $6 but who's complaining? Yes, the carnitas taquitos (like soft tacos) are supreme and reason enough to come here. Diabolically good. But don't miss out on their other stars - any burrito, tostada, posole, hard shell taco, it's all good. Really good salsa bar too. And a wide array of $3 Mexican beers...even cheaper if you fancy American beer. 5 stars for consistency, value and all around good eating! I've read reviews about the area being sketchy but it's not so don't let that deter you. Parking lot is small but street parking is also to be found. It's cafeteria style so grab a tray, order up a storm and take a seat :)

El Abajeño will always be a favorite. Over the years, the food here has always been delicious, cheap, and (with just a couple exceptions) very consistent. Portions are huge and grizzly. I love the taquitos, the cocido, and the monstrous nachos. Breakfast is very good too - chilaquiles and machaca & eggs. Great staff and space.

Maybe we went on an off day. The food really wasn't that great. The sauces were all too weak and watery. The prices are very cheap and the people who work there are very friendly so I don't want to knock this place, but I probably would try a different place next time.

Up-Date: I dont know if I forgot or blacked out for these last 15 years or so, but I noticed El Abajeno also makes Gorditas. I stopped by after work on 11-14-08 & was debating on what to get, I noticed hidden somewhere "Gorditas" on their menu & called it. They were pretty good like "home made" or something. Btw, make sure your sober &.not use a celly to do a update, lol.

If you want true Mexican food, you need to go to El Abajeno. Never in my life have I ever had better Mexican food than this. And their portions are huge! Defintely come here if you have a big appetite. I love their sopitas, and their burritos... top it off with a Negra Modela beer and you're in mouth watering heaven!

This place is so over rated!!! My hubby and I went there thinking that the food was soooo good what a big woop! We each ordered the albajeno burrito he ordered the tongue n I ordered carne asada both were lacking flavor the only thing I could taste was how salty the beans were. I was so disappointed because the reviews this place gets makes it seem like the place is so good! If you want real good mexican food go to La Barca near USC 2414 S. Vermont ave 90007 now that's what you call real good mexican food!

This place has it down: Gratuitious amounts of meat (beef, chicken, carnitas) FRESH refried beans and rice And plenty of fat (cheese, avocado, etc) Make sure you're hungry! This place is awesome.

If you like Mexican food you should check this place out. my word, the Carnitas taquitos are just to die for. It's just simple but oh so 'Ono (delicious) .It's simple-- made out of corn tortillas, carnitas(pork),avocado, and cheese but man oh man is it good..Heart stopping good..And if you chase it with a nice cold beer it will be double trouble...I have also tried the El Abajeno burrito..That bugga is big. My mouth is watering --sorry.. The only drawback is that it has a small parking lot..But after you eat here you might want to take a walk anyway..

Ok, I just got back in September '12 and have eaten here 4 times this past week. So, not only did I miss LA, but I REALLY missed LA Mexican food. Since I'm on the westside Abajeno is keeping me in chorizo. And for about 5 bux I ain't complainin.

So far so good. I finally got a chance to try this place. Strictly based on the pollo and carne asada taquitos I had, the food is very tasty. Can't wait to try other menu items, in particular the burritos.

Best Mexican food in LA! The super tostada made with carne asada is the best! The tostada comes as a huge mountain of chips, refried beans, lettuce, tomato, onions, cheese, pickled green pepper, meat topped off with meat sauce. Put the house green sauce on it from the salsa bar and you are in for a treat! The burritos are good as well as big. If you are a big eater then get their super burrito because you will probably not finish it. El Abajeno serves all the traditional Mexican fare including seafood and they do all of it very well. Prices are good and the taste is outstanding. if I had move from the LA area, I would miss this restaurant the most!

If you're craving menudo, come to El Abajeno. This modest restaurant sits adjacent to a liquor market on a residential street corner. With its plain exterior and barred windows, it looks more like a bar in the hood rather than a mexican joint on the westside. But the moment you walk thru the doors, you're lured in by a warmly decorated space filled with hungry, happy locals. The menudo is full of your abuelita's homemade goodness. The rich, slightly gelatinous chili broth is chock full of hominy, whole garlic heads, onions and tripe. And they don't skimp on the tripe! it comes in 3 hearty textures - webby honeycomb, smooth fatty stomach lining and chewy leg tendon. Ding ding - it hits the spot! But the reason I'm giving Abajeno only 3 stars is because the Veggie Tostada was a huge disappointment! First off, it wasn't even a tostada - it was Veggie NACHOS. It was a bed of tortilla chips laden with watery beans, watery guac, flavorless tomatoes and iceberg lettuce. And get this, when they handed me my plate, they asked if i wanted meat sauce on it?!?! Go figure.... Go to El Abajeno, but stick to their strong suits--burritos and menudos.

Hands down the best Mexican joint I've eaten in the Westside. Normally I eat Mexican food on the Eastside (or close to it). My boyfriend introduced me to El Abajeno and it reminds me of El Tepeyac Cafe. The burritos are huge and definitely worth your money. I love that they make the burrito right in front of you. The chilequiles are awesome as well. This place is so good that even my family is hooked. Definitely make it to Culver City for the Westside's version of El Tepeyac.

Yummie, yummie, yummie!! This is a classic whole in the wall joint with authentic food. My guy and I tried to come here for breakfast but the parking lot was superpacked. So my boyfriend promised we'd come the next day for breakfast. Call it psychological but when I can't have something and especially when it comes to food, I want it even more! Well, we couldn't make it to breakfast because my bf had work early. Determined, I said we are going for dinner!! I had the beef taco and cheese enchilada combination plate. Everthing was delicious especially the refried beans. My only complaint is they didn't give us enough chips like most Mexican resturants do.

The carnitas taquitos.... not fried, not what I expected, not what I know a taquito to be.... Amazing. I would go back, I would recommend.

This place has the EQUATION. tortilla (carbs) well greased w/ lard/butter (fat) with fatty meat (fat) loaded with cheese (fat) and avocado (fat) carbs + fat^4 = awesome x 30 Carne Asada TAQUITO is the best one.

For 8 years we've been going to church across the street from this restaurant. Yesterday we had no plans for mothers day so we walked across the street and was pleasantly surprised. All I have to say is: Carnitas Taquito. We were 2 or 3 back in the line at around 1pm and by the time we got our food, the line was almost out the door. This is a gem we've only now discovered and I could kick myself for not having gone sooner--I could've been eating this every Sunday for the last 8 years!

After spending three hours at The Getty, my husband and I were looking for a place to rest our feet and fill our stomachs. Enter this place. Noting that a couple were in the same area (and i having lost my internet connection on the tram), we opted to drive down and just go to the first one we saw. Unassuming but tastefully decorated inside, i was optimistic. We both ordered the carne asada burrito, which comes with beans, rice, and pico de gallo inside, and pickled carrots and a scoop of guacamole outside. Now here's the weird thing about this place. I would say most of the ingredients on the plate were not, on their own, the height of deliciousness. The beans, rice, and guacamole were all flat - I hesitate to complain because most places you go way oversalt things, but these parts needed more. The sauce poured over the burrito was good, but felt a little unbalanced in a way I couldn't identify. The pico de gallo had pieces of cilantro that were too large to eat comfortably. The carne asada was the only part really tasty on its own, but the weird thing was that when you put it all together, it was the best burrito I've ever had. No, really. The best burrito. Ever. And as a California native, you can bet I've had a lot of burritos in my life - maybe hundreds. This topped them all. The pickled carrots are spicy and were also really excellent. Horchata was a little overly sweet but no complaints there, and we were totally full and happy for under $20. We each got about six chips with our order and at first I was like WTF six chips, that's a weird amount, but you know, we didn't really need more. And they were good, too, the shattering thin ones perfect for people who really want Mexican food, but just had their braces tightened. Yep, been there...

Some of the best tacos on the west side. but only if your a lover of real Mexican food. If you're a fan of the supermarket-like tacos at Tito's then you're in the wrong spot. These are authentic, inexpensive and very fresh. This place also has the largest burrito I've ever seen. While it isn't much on ambiance it doesn't have to be. Definitely try the carnitas.

Went here at about 1pm. My stomach was hurting from about 2pm - rest of the night. Keep in mind I was hungry as hell and really wanted to try this place that I heard was so good. Otherwise, I would have left this spot immediately upon entering. First of all it looked junky inside. The area they make the food is set up something like Chipotle but 50 times messier. The employees seemed like they didnt want to be there and I cant stand people talking over my food. They go to the back to get the tortillas, come back to get the chicken. She rolled my wet tortillas with her hands...I felt like she was about to suck the enchilada sauce off her fingers. Thats how homemade this whole process felt. It was slightly disgusting me. Then she took the whole plate to the back again to heat it. It was just too much. I got chicken enchiladas and a carne asada taco. The enchiladas were nothing special at all. The Carne was very good. But because of the stomachache I'm afraid to ever go back here. Parking was horrendous. If you dare go here, try the carne asada.

The best carnitas taquitos or tostada in the west. The prices are great and the food is better. The burritos are huge. Because the food is served cafeteria style you can get your burrito assembled right in front of you. They even serve beer. This is an authentic Mexican Restaurant where you will see all types of people enjoying great food in an old school atmosphere. If you love Mexican food you have to eat here.

Great place for quick, delicious, and affordable Mexican food. I had a vegetarian tostada, which was plentiful. We went for lunch on a week day and the way it works is that you pass by the counter area and the attendants prepare your dish in front of you. Then they give you the plate and you put it on the tray and pay at the cashier which is at the end of the bar. Then you seat yourself and enjoy your meal.

Most Definitely the best Mexican Food in Los Angeles! I have been coming here since before I was born! (1987) In addition to many memories coming here with the family, this place has a great, cozy atmosphere, always clean, great service, and amazing food. Everything is delicious! I always go for a burrito (asada) and the mariscos are to die for! Since moving to the east coast, whenever I come home, I always make sure to visit El Abajeno. This is a little treasure in Culver City, and I hope it has many, many more years of business ahead, as the owners have kept in in great condition all of these years, and the food ALWAYS tastes the same: absolutely amazing. It is the quintessential deliciousness of authentic Mexican food. I could kiss the cooks!!! Viva El Abajeno!

Oh man, it took me 3 plus years to try this place and I have been missing out. Excellent home style mexican food and huge portions at dirt cheap prices. Don't be intimidated by the bars on the window and the dark interior. Just go in and enjoy. Just a note: Taquitos here are actually more like crunchy tacos, tostatas are more like crazy nachos and the burritos are large.

This place is freakin delicious! Pretty authentic. I had the Flautas and they were mighty tasty. Insignificant other had the Taquitos and a carne asada taco. Nice people and all the Salsas were tasty and fresh. Go there. I think it's better than Tacomiendo.

Enchiladas = Amazing Chicken Bean & Rice Burrito = Amazing Weird cafeteria style ordering, but great atmosphere. I never get chicken anywhere, but here I highly recommend anything with the shredded chicken, it's ridiculously juicy and flavorful.

This place is really good. NIce people, good food ( try the tostada or the taquitos !! ). The food is fresh and good tasting and a bunch of it ( not the place to go on a diet ! ). I was not terribly impressed with the "salsa bar" which never seems to have salsa on it or the fact that they have one line and they process you basically when you are at the counter. If there is a long line, it could take a while to eat... Best way to fix that, go off hours...( but still go ! )...

This place is great! The El Abajeno Burrito should be a Man Vs Food challenge is it hasn't been already. Too big for one person. Taquitos were great. Tacos excellent. Great all around experience. Very good authentic and cheap! Don't delay! I cant believe I have never been here before. I will be back.

Hot, hot, hot salsa!!! I've had a couple of breakfasts catered by this place for work and the techs seem to love it - usually the rice, beans, breakfast burritos (eggs/ham or eggs/chorizo or just eggs/beans). Okay... so their food is good. I mean, really good. But hot-damn... it's G-R-E-A-S-Y. I finally ate IN the restaurant the other day for lunch and as I took a bite of my hard shell asada taco, the oil was dripping down to my wrists! Blech! Did it stop me? Hell no! Did I have a tummy ache later? Hell yes! I also had half a quesadilla and it was served with lots of chopped guacamole... and if you don't ask for 'chopped' guacamole, odds are, you'll probably get the watered down, runny stuff. I had a taste of my co-worker's asada steak and it was so lemony good! And tender! Seriously... do they cook this stuff in lard? If it wasn't so close to my office, I probably wouldn't come back too often or at all... to save the arteries n all...

Love ! Love ! Love ! I've been eating here since I was about 6 years old, I mean I use to live around the corner :) lucky me, I know right ?! I usually get the chicken super tostada but I've tried EVERYTHING here and it's always good #foodporn lol only reason I have 4 stars is because sometimes your they are stingy with meat or cheese ( which I love ) but it depends who you get, besides that I'm sure you will love it !!!!

  • Stewart T.

Taquitos are awesome. They're basically soft shell tacos w/ melted cheese rolled up. The standard carnitas is the best but carne asada ain't bad either. Also had the hard shell tacos de asada which destroys Titos. Why would you ever go to Titos when Abajeno is right down the street??? Very accommodating to take-out. Can't wait to try their stews. Fave Mexican joint on the Westside for sure. Only thing missing is nuclear hot sauce like El Taurino/King Taco.

  • J. N.

Really bad Mexican food in LA is hard to find, but everything I had today looked (and tasted) like it came out of a baby's diaper. Green runny guacamole, old/pasty rice in a brown and red mush burrito con camarones, and salsa that tasted like soap. And a pork burrito costs $4.99 and my shrimp burrito (ordered off the menu so I had no idea of the cost) was $10.95? The 1st time I was there the food was bad and I wanted to give them a 2nd chance (since they're listed as "family owned since 1969"). There won't be a 3rd.

Growing up here in Culver city (1975) El Abajeno has been a staple in my family. Decent prices. Not many Mexican restaurants can make GOOD rice and bean,(being that I am Mexican), I know what good rice and beans are. And they deliver. My husband is a very picky eater when it comes to Mexican food(being that his mother is such a dam good cook, Yes her rice & beans are better)..However he loves eating here. especially huevos con chorizo (sometimes I order it for dinner). We usually eat here Sunday morning and when every craving Mexican food, which is a lot.. Their chicken hard tacos, taquitos(chicken/pork)soft corn tortillas, soups all 3 of them, gorditas, killer tamales to order for holiday's (hubby's mom are better),but their tamales kick-ass too, burritos(all) are excellent. All of these are some of my favorite and more.Try this place you'll become a fan. Something about the way they prepare their chicken for their dishes, awwww so moist, and flavorful. When you think of authentic Mexican food, this is the place to come. Around my area there are only a handful of them. And the service well, i've never had incident of rudeness. Friendly workers. The reason for 4 stars is there seafood selection they don't devein their shrimp, and that to me is nasty..But everything else is fantastic..

I may not have ordered the most complex of meals, just a two-taco de asada combo and a Sangri-cola, but this authentic mexican joint really hit the spot. My spanish is near perfect, so ordering was quick and clean, the cashier and food prep were both somewhat taken aback by my spanish (which still confuses me since 1/2 of the radio stations are in spanish- do they not expect me to learn spanish at some point?) and were pretty friendly too. The tacos had a LOT of cilantro on them, I had to pick off most of it. I don't dislike cilantro, but it's not my favorite garnish. The salsa was fresh and the carne was moist. Can't complain, but I've had better.

El Abajeno is the best--greasy-satisfying-food-coma around. All of our friends love coming here. The food is always delicious and the service is perfect. We used to live just around the corner from there for years and we would make a trip there before our weekly card games. This place rocks and it brings lots of good memories.

  • Mis T.

So delicious! The carnitas taquitos are pretty great. A lot of people on the westside seem to love this place & I can definitely say that I am hooked. Their meat has great flavor, which is due to the way they marinate the meats. The portion sizes are well worth the money.

  • Leslie W.

Fernando M. at LMU introduced me to this place. There is a long steam table, grab a tray and tell the person behind the counter what you want. They will make it right in front of you. The menu is over your head. Things that take a little longer to make will be brought to your table. The food sticks to your ribs and tastes wonderful. The music can be loud, but there are plenty of tables and places to hide. There is a rolling salsa cart with all kinds of tasty salsas, one for every taste. During Lent, there is a special menu. Parking on side, a little narrow. Kids shouldn't be a problem, but it can get loud and crowded. Highlights: tortas de carnitas, Super Tostada, el Abajeo burrito will feed three, the rice is super tasty, cocido on weekends

I had to have mexican food on cinco de mayo. I yelped a couple places and ended up here. I was debating on eating at El Abajeno or across the street at tacomiendo. Luckily there was a security man patrolling the parking lot who told me hands down el abajeno was the place to go. My friend and I ordered: two chicken taquitos (umm not at all what I am used to. Their taquitos are made up of tortillas with shredded chicken, avocado, cheese and lettuce on top...interesting), 2 carne asada tacos (yum), sopitos (omg the best!!! I discovered these for the first time and now I am hooked. Gotta go back for some more!), horchata (soooo yummy, not too watered down and not too sweet) and some some other stuff. I was so full!

  • Carey T.

I go to El Abajeno for their taquitos and chile rellenos. Having one taquito is a meal and having two, well, you will feel like you ate enough and gotten your money's worth. Tons of carnitas, cheese and avocado make for a great taquito. Their red salsa has a nice kick too.

This is a great place for fast and fresh mexican food. The menu is big but their portions are bigger! They have a small salsa bar to top it off. I am a big fan of self serve salsa bars. I ordered the Fiesta Plate and it was great. The pork and beef was tender without being dry. The sauces were savory but a tad too mild for me. I guess that is what the salsa bar is for. Overall this place is cheap and filling. The service can be a little slow but that's just because they compose your order right in front of you. Well worth the wait.

Today was the second time that I've been here. The last time must have been a year ago, and it fulfilled all the expectations I've had for it. Today I ordered the fiesta burrito, small menudo, and my boyfriend ordered the super tostada. The fiesta burrito was delicious, but the small menudo was meh. I could do without. The super tostada was such a huge portion I could not fathom how anyone could finish it all in one sitting. But, America is an obese country...so I...wouldn't doubt it. Anyway, my friends ordered 3 carne asada tacos but they misunderstood her and put in the order as 3 carne asada PLATES. My friend was really angry, but the staff was very apologetic and accommodating which was greatly appreciated. I love the horchata here. The sitting is comfortable with an open salsa bar. There is security in the parking lot so I felt a little safe, but also cautious. I mean, why would a security be needed? This area can get a little dangerous at night I guess. Despite the fact that the orders were wrong, the carne asada plate looked really good. The carne asada looked juicy and they didn't skimp on the proportion for that either.

This place is our go to hangover mexican restaurant they have good chilaquiles and menudo. What else do you need!!! The people that work there are pretty nice! Everytime we've gone it's been really really packed but don't worry! By the time you order your food there will be an available seat for you to pig out. 4 stars because although good, I live in santa monica there's no good mexican food anywhere, this is the closest good mexican restaurant but it's def. Not the best

Are you serious? I thought I wrote a review already! El Abajeño is an amazingly authentic Mexican joint. The food here is always good. Family and I came in late when they were here on vacation. My dad got the Abajeño burrito.. Which comically ended up being bigger than me! I love the taco plate, rice and beans are great, even late. The crunchy tacos are delicious. Definitely try this place, it's wonderful

Taquitos were really good...best part was the slightly naturally sweet corn tortilla. Nice little joint with counter-style service, though they do even accept most if not all credit cards. Service is quick and the salsa bar is replenished frequently. Horchata is on the sweeter side, but not too sweet as can often be encountered. Cheese enchilada pretty good too as others have noted. Overall a delightful, casual and simple atmosphere. It is a little out of the way for me, but if I am in that area again ever I would definitely revisit and try some of the other things on the menu (e.g., the mondo salad/nacho plate that the people next to me ordered).

Best Mexican Food on the Westside. Get the taquitos! Not your normal taquito-- this is basically a soft shell taco with avocado slices. Get the cheese enchilada. Probably the best I've ever had. Oh and get the hard shell taco. Just get it! It comes with some type of avocado goodness. Um yes, go now!

I absolutely love Mexican food, so any time I get an opportunity to eat it, I will. That's what brought me to El Abajeño. The servings looked huge and the food looked authentic. Firstly, I will say that parking was annoying for me because I was on the wrong side of the street and couldn't really turn in or execute a U-turn. So, basically, don't be on the wrong side of that Inglewood. I decided to just park in the lot of the Mexican supermarket down the street and walk two blocks over, which essentially makes me the fittest guy ever. Secondly, while the place looks interesting from the outside with its barred windows, it looks pretty comfortable inside. There's a huge menu board with a ton of options, and seating is aplenty. It's cafeteria style, so you order to have the employees assemble your meal in front of you. I found the prices to be just alright; most plates were about $8-10 including rice and beans. However, everything looked pretty delicious. I ultimately decided on a wet beef, bean, and rice burrito, which basically looked insane, as you can ascertain from the photo I took. Yeah, basically, I realized I wasn't gonna be eating the most healthy meal in the world, but I knew I would enjoy it the second I saw it. The employees are nice and don't seem to hate working there, which is always great to see. Another plus is that they do accept debit and credit cards here, which I was afraid they might not after seeing very little mention at all in any Yelp reviews. The most amazing part of this place is the fact that they have a picture of BARON DAVIS EATING THERE!!!! BARON DAVIS!!! You know, the NBA's Golden State Warriors' "We Believe" point guard BARON DAVIS? BARON DAVIS, who was drafted by the CHARLOTTE HORNETS and then eventually played on the LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS? BARON DAVIS! ...What was Baron Davis even doing here? Anyways, I enjoyed the salsa bar very much as well as the limes and peppers available, which BETTER BE THERE for any real Mexican restaurant! I sat down and feasted my eyes on that beast of a burrito to mentally prepare myself for the crazy concoction I was able to devour. Then, I dug in. Boy, the first few bites were heavenly! I loved loved loved it. Then, of course, it got extremely heavy, and it became a case study in diminishing returns. I still enjoyed it and finished the thing, but by the end I started feeling kind of sick because of how filling it was. Overall, it was very satisfying but not the most delicious and tasty burrito I've ever had. I found that the sauce they covered the burrito in was overpowering, and I just found the whole thing a bit much. If I ever stop by here again, I'll definitely order something else. Because let's face it: if Mexican food is in the equation, I'm the answer. OH, AND BARON DAVIS!!!

El Abajeno has been around for at least thirty-five years that I know. It has been over twenty-five years since I've been here when I came in to meet a friend for lunch on Wednesday, 5/6/15 at around 12:15 PM. This is not a full service Mexican restaurant. You order your food and wait for it at the counter, and then either take it to-go or sit at any open table in their dining room. The order takers actually prepare the food; i.e., they dish food from the steam rack pans on to your plate or takeout box. On this visit, the bad: I waited in a line to order at the counter. When it was my turn, the young man behind the counter (with basically a very unhappy look on his face) literally looked over my shoulder at the (Hispanic) gentleman behind me and asked him what he wanted. When I said, "Excuse me, I'm next," this counterman totally ignored me and continued taking the other person's order. The same young man who first ignored me and then waited on me after helping the person behind me, used his bare hands to pick up the grated cheese he put on my salad. Forks were missing from the utensil service area. Salsa bar had missing items and was very messy. The good: My Tostada Salad was AOK. It consisted of Frijoles on the bottom of the plate (I declined the chips that were going to be put on the plate), lettuce, onion, tomato, grated cheese and shredded Carnitas. This restaurant is unique in its own way. If it is excellent Mexican food you are looking for or if you want to be served in a welcoming atmosphere, there are many other places locally to go to. If you just want a quick, somewhat authentic Mexican "quick fix" meal and don't care about ambiance, surly/rude employees, questionable food delivery procedures or a dining area that may or may not have clean table tops, this is your place.

Desperate for menudo, I came here to give it another try. I was glad to see they put out fresh onions, cilantro, and limes for my meal. There was plenty of tripe and patas, and the broth had good color and flavor today. It made all the difference in the world for the flavor. I also had my traditional carnitas super tostada. My go to which always satisfy my bean and meat cravings.

The normal burritos are large and the Abajeno burrito's just crazy. My standy-by here is the chicken and rice burrito. It's not my favorite ever, but definitely one of the better Mexican places on the Westside. Why would you ever go to Chipotle when you can get a better, bigger, and cheaper burrito here? Oh, and they give you a side of chips for free. It's sad that I have to mention this, but so many places don't. There's also a salsa bar. The red salsa is a bit sharp, but at least it's actually kind of spicy.

I've driven past this place all my life. I finally made it in this place, since Paco's Taco's is just my TO GO to taco joint when I want to have a drink and a taco, but still not my favorite. This place is not fancy, I looked like a deer in front of headlights, since the menu is so large and you have to order as they make your dish right in front of you, I needed to hurry and move to the right. Two beef tacos with rice/beans was delicious. Price was reasonable and I finished off with a Corona. I would definitely come back, since its down the street.

OMG this place. If you are in the area (or even not), you must go! The menu board is so huge that it's actually hard to see it all from one spot. No matter what you are craving, there is sure to be something on the menu for you. The only downside to this place is the somewhat long wait time (for a fast casual restaurant). However, you are waiting for legit, delicious food - so if you absolutely don't have 5-10 minutes to spare for epic food, go to McDonald's. The cheese enchiladas are amazing, and come served with delicious rice and beans - they actually taste homemade, or at least prepared in a way superior to most comparable restaurants. The flan is also spot on, and a great price. However, the highlight food for me are the taquitos. These are not taquitos as I have known them, but rather more like super stuffed tacos. They come taco-style as tortillas stuffed FULL of carnitas with cheese and avocado. These things are stuffed so full, I can barely eat more than 1. Incredibly delicious! This place has a salsa bar - I recommend the green salsa and the hot red sauce. The chips are great as well. They have a parking lot, which is another plus. They also serve beer, and the ambiance of the place is cute and welcoming. I will certainly return!

Football! That's what came to mind as I watched my El Abajeno Burrito being built. It's the size of a small football. Take a look at my pics - they don't really capture the size, even with the five dollar bill thrown in for scale. For $10, it'll feed a few people. Anyway, my uncle had raved about this place for years. A few times, he tried to take me to lunch there but I had other plans beforehand. Until this afternoon, when he asked if I wanted to join him for lunch. Not having any plans and no excuse not to, I was in, like flint. This place is located over near the corner of Inglewood and Culver. It's on the Inglewood - going south, on the right. There's street parking and there's also a small lot. Parking is free - so no complaints from me. Walk in and jump in line. They'll make your order as you watch and as you shuffle to the cashier, you pay as they hand you your food. It's not a full service restaurant where you sit and are served. If you want anything, you go and get it yourself. Excluding refills. Fountains drinks are free. Anything else, is an additional full charge; stuff like Horchata etc. Salsa bar isn't labeled so grab some and try them. If it looks hot, for you it maybe, however for me, even the hottest sauce seemed mild. Maybe I need to ask for super hot from the staff behind the counter. Lots of seating and could probably accommodate a large group. That's if the timing is right and the tables that can be pushed together aren't taken. Remember, it's not full service. It's take your food and seat yourself. No host to coordinate seating. Now for the food. As you can see by the pics, it's a huge portion. As for the taste, it's not bad. I tried the Asada and it was a little on the dry side. Adding salsa helped and I even tested it for dinner, as I couldn't eat it all. Heating it up in the microwave, turned out meh. I know for next time, as the burrito is being built, to specify quantities of the filling. Way too much beans and lettuce. Doesn't heat up well when you nuke it. The veggies that is. I've heard awesome things about the Tostada so it may be the next menu item I try when I return. Yes, I'll be back.

Man o man o man. Stopped here after a workout (lol) to get this abajeño burrito I've been hearing about. Got in the long line of this cafeteria style mexican kitchen and made the excellent decision to be patient. The food was well worth the wait. Ordered my el abajeño burrito with carnitas and no lettuce. The server poured heaping servings of rice, beans, cheese, avocado, and carnitas into 2 large tortillas. With the look of amazement in my eyes, the server asks "would you like con Carne sauce on top? " Yes please! (Aka Run That Shit!!!) Got home and shared the burrito with 2 other people and 4 small dogs. The burrito was very flavorful. Nothing was too salty and was very balanced taste wise. The El Abajeno definitely kills chipotle and titos!! I'll be back here soon A+++

I'm hooked on their huevos rancheros and bean & cheese burritos. There's plenty of seating and the staff is friendly. They don't have a wait staff so you'll order at the counter and seat yourself. El Yummy!

Have you ever been to a place that didn't live up to the hype? Well this is it for me. I've been here thrice, really wanting to like it but...there's just no there there for me. If this is what people think is authentic, home made, Mexican food like mama use to make, I'm sorry for you, but your mother was a terrible cook. I'll admit the quantity of cafeteria style food is significant, but quality and quantity are so very different and this is at best cafeteria style Mexican food. With so many better Mexican food options, never mind the great options, in LA I don't understand the loyal following this place has. The chili Verde and chili Colorado with chile relleno plate disappointed on every level. The meat was chewy as opposed to fork tender. And the chili relleno was lackluster. While I hoped that with that variety SOMETHING would be good, nothing deserved to be considered much better than edible. With all the reviews taking about this is how mama use to make it well... I felt like I was at the proverbial mother in law who can't cook house but you have to eat it and smile. I'll admit it, I'm a snob when it comes to dishes I enjoy preparing. And to expect a restaurant to live up to those kinds of real home made authentic standards is a lot to ask, With as many great reviews as this place has I expected more than quantity. I wanted quality.

Yummy.. I found this place on yelp of course. I ordered the pollo burrito. The regular burrito was enough for me to split into two meal so I know the El Abajeno would be able to feed me for a week! This is the first cafeteria style Mexican restaurant that I can remember being in. The line was almost to the door but moved rather quickly. I ordered by phone so I was able to walk up and just pick up my order. Yay for that. The owner guy is attentive and was there both times I went. Yes. I went back the very next day because I do stuff like that. Ordered the same thing and it was just as good which is a great sign. The refried beans and the rice inside of the burrito... Muy bueno. I will be back for sure.

This place is dank! I love this food. Definitely one of the best mexican food places in the area. It's so cheap and they give you so much food ! The line takes a little wait and u have to stand in it but it's completely worth it. I went with the fiesta burrito and man that this is filling! The taquitos looked like some real dankness too! I definitely Recommend it to anyone that loves true Mexican food.

I've had several things here (the enchiladas, the tacos, the burrito, rice and bean s), but only recently have I tried Abajeno's BEST thing. Thank you Yelpers, for suggesting to me! I will be eternally grateful! The carnitas tacos! OH MY GOODNESS. They are eyes-rolling-back-in-my-head delicious! I can't believe I didn't know about this before! I had never been that excited about El Abajeno . . . until this moment. They are large corn tortillas stuffed with fat amounts of shredded moist carnitas. Not too fatty or overly greasy, the carnitas is perfection. The tacos are topped with white cheese and thick slices of avocado. Very filling! You will not even need the rice and beans that come with the combo and the sides aren't that great anyway. All you need in your life here are the carnitas tacos!

Pros: - OK food - Generous portions Cons: - Really bitter service - Loud - A menu very difficult to read - Employees handling food with their bare hands (as opposed to disposable gloves, like you'd normally see at say, Subway) - Only one glass of water with your meal - Wet trays - Lacking silverware (we got one knife for two people) - The bathroom requires you to borrow a key Can't recommend.

Bomb home made Mexican food! Inexpensive for food that tastes like someone's Mom is cooking back there.. Carnitas taquitos are really like soft shell tacos (not crispy) but delicious..

I love how some places get to change the naming convention for standard foods, especially when it adds an element of American sarcasm to a language that traditionally lacks it. They say 'taquito' and I say 'un pinche tacote'. I've been here a couple of times now and was reading on Yelp that people like the carnitas. I like carnitas, let's give this thing a go. Well the menu says Dinner Plates, Carnitas. The guys asks me if I want a plate, or if I want 'taquitos'. The way they ask it makes me want to respond, "Si mijo, con unas tortillitas de maiz, unos frijolitos, una aguita". The tacos are not small. They are not fried and rolled like other 'taquitos' sold in the region. They are two big ass tacos in two small corn tortillas. The use of the diminutive -ito just sounds so funny because it is not small. It is like calling the fat kid tiny. And if you eat to many of these carnitas taquitos you are going to be the fat kid, lol. I like the carnitas at this Abajeño more than the carnitas at the Guadalajara location, just personal preference, they have different styles. I like coming here because I used to go to the Abajeño locations in Guadalajara and Tlaquepaque a lot. They are very different, but I get excited all the same.

  • Dana L.

The carnitas are the best thing there! For someone who rarely eats meat, I can probably eat their carnitas by the pound. The taquitos are great, too -- though they look more like giant soft tacos and they stuff it with your choice of meat by the fistful. Another regular for me.

I was so hungry today when I got off of work. But no My crack-head boyfriend claimed this was the best place around but he is a crack-head. BOOOOO I ordered tacos and it was a mistake. I tried his over stuffed tostada crap and that was a mistake. God I should have just gone to McDonalds. This place is all the calories and none of the flavor. blah. Now I want to write a song about bad mexican food at Abajeno it will be called The Mexican Jumping Terd song (Yes its THAT kinda Bad Mexican)

As good as it gets!!! I have been coming to this place for a long time. Some of the locals still call it Vic's. Whenever I am in the mood for good Mexican this is the first place that comes to mind. I usually stick to the basics. Burritos, Tortas, tostadas and their famous Taquitos. You can get the El Abajeno burrito which literrally is the size of a football. Then there is the taquito which is like an overstuffed soft taco. Always generous with all portions. Love this place

So I'm at work and a co-worker tells me about this Mexican joint nearby. "You just go down Culver and it's on the corner on the right on Inglewood," he says. Uh, yeah. Little does he know that there are THREE Mexican restaurants right there! One on the southeast side in a strip mall, El Abajeno on the southwest side and another right next door to that. We stood there, two co-workers and I, contemplating what to do....what to do? Hmmm...they all had an "A" rating, one was small which was how the guy described it, and one had a line of people...another description. After much deliberation we opted for El Abajeno merely because we parked the car RIGHT in front of it. lol The menu is over head so be sure and stand back, peruse, and decide before you get up tot he counter with your tray in hand or you'll be all sorts of confused by the different selections. Lots of choices at REALLY reasonable prices...we're talking burritos for $3.10-7.60 (I suggest you SPLIT one with a buddy because they are HUGE!), Taquitos, Tostadas, Soups, Tacos, Quesadillas, Seafood dinners for around $10, and dinner combos...ranging from about $5 t0 $10. Oh...and let's not forget the BEER!!! No margs...just beer. I'm ok with my Negra Modelo so the rest of the choices just flew on by me...of course, I had a ROOT Beer on account of um, it being a WORK lunch break. But next time...watch out. Pretty spacious place, lots of seating, open for lunch AND Breakfast...ample parking right out front. TIP: if you get a soda, opt for a MEDIUM at $1.55 because the Small is REALLLLLY small (like 5 year-old child small) and only .35 cents less.

El Abajeño wins hands down as my favorite mexican food place in LA. The chicken taquitos are insane. They also have a burrito as big as my arm, and i got a big arm. make sure to get some of the red sauce on your rice.

If youre craving mexican food on the West Side, this place seems to be a good option in an unassuming location. Everything we had was pretty good, including a flavorful sauce over the pork burrito. The only thing that was lacking was the watery guacamole. A bit embaressing for a homestyle mexican restaurant that has been around since 1960 apparently. Ill come back because the place was clean, with hard working friendly staff and huge portion for good prices. Cant ask for much more.

REALLY reasonable prices. And you will find that one of your extended family members will beg you to "Stop and get me some El Abajeno---on your way over"... Because they have a craving for it. (People call the place "Vic's" for short) On the down low, did you know? that at the meat counter nextdoor ---Sanchez Meat Co.--- you can get "seasoned" carne asada to cook up for family and friends? For later? Get the "seasoned" and way more than you possibly think you could use because the---carne, corn tortilla, grilled-green-onion-combo, on the barbeque-----is all it takes for your gathering--- & you will run out. Stop in and get some to Pre-Try it, after you FILL-UP at El Abajeno. Did you know? about Juanitas Taco Shop down the coast in Encinitas? Go to it's reviews and have the locals & extended locals ex-splane it to you. I drive the coastal route down (get off the 5 fwy ) at Oceanside, keeping south until you see the ocean---nice, on my way someplace. Stop at Juanitas, and keep going...

This is the best cheap, authentic Mexican food in the area. They do it cafeteria style, so you go up to the counter and then take your food to your table. Its really cheap and they give you tons of food. Everything I have gotten here is really good and their different salsas are the best. Its my favorite hole the wall, a lot nicer on the inside than you would think! I was also impressed that there is always a security guard in the parking lot when I go.

Authentic, fantastic, and hands down one of the best mexican food places that I have ever eaten at. When they say "try the #12!" - you should. It's a pork "taquito" but what they really mean is that it's pretty much a small soft taco. It's filled to the brim, and very tasty. I can't remember, but at the time I last went there, I only used cash. I can't remember if it's because it doesn't accept credit cards, or what.

One of the best carnitas tacos I've ever had. The meat is tender a flavorful, not greasy at all. Get it taquito style, with an avacado slice and cheese. taquito's are not fried here but they are dipped in oil/lard? I'd prefer if they were not, but not sure how to communicate that to the staff... Not that it's a bad thing, just makes it messy. The regular soft taco was not dipped. If you want guacamole be sure to ask for "chunky" guacamole, otherwise they might give you guac sauce.

    (4)
  • Alex d.

The taquitos here are magical. They're about the size of a small burrito: a lightly toasted corn tortilla bursting with carnitas, melted cheese, and a slice of avocado. And I was expecting some kind of rolled up fried thing.... ho ho hoooo

El Abajeno has the Carnitas in Los Angeles. . . .so so yummy.. . . Located in Culver City just off the 405. . .. El Abajeno's Carnitas. . . in their famous Taquitos are truly delight. You have never seen taquitos made this way. Usually you see taquitos rolled and deep fried. But these taquitos look like a stuffed taco with shredded cheese and a slice of avocado on top. A bit greasy from the lard - yes LARD. Goodness from lard. . . .don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I can eat two. . . most mortals can only eat one. Though after two, I am useless (food coma). I'm telling you, you gotta stop by El Abajeno and have their taquitos. Their prices are reasonable. They have a diverse menu, though I have yet to order anything else. The Jamica is good to wash everything down. They have a small salsa/sauce bar with green and red salsa. Nice little hole-in-the-wall. I fully recommend to anyone who loves Mexican food.

Stop here for real Mexican food.....(this is not Titos Tacos or Taco Bell) Just ask for the #12...carnitas plate & you will be sold. The cocido (beef stew) is great & just like deep down in Mexico. They have a cafeteria style line & serve hefty portions. Yes....they sell Menudo on weekends. You can ask for large orders of tamales.

cheap, cozy spot to get delicious, authentic mexican food! this spot was highly recommended to us by two different people when we told them we were moving to the area... and we've been taking advantage of el abajeno ever since! the most impressive dish to order is the giant (read: HUGE!) el abajeno burrito - more than enough to feed 4 absolutely starving people! i also like ordering the pozole (pork soup) and their carnitas burrito (get the sauce - this is the one i crave) - the best!

Stopped in last night with the missus for dinner. I had the best damn carnitas tacquitos I've ever tasted, except they weren't deep fried. Carnitas, queso blanco and avocado wrapped in a warm grilled (and greasy) tortilla. Very interesting take on the usual preparation. My wife had the chicken enchilada and she liked it, but complained that it had too much cheese for her taste. The Jamaica was prepared from a mix instead of fresh, so that was a tad disappointing, but overall I had a positive experience and will return to try some other dishes soon. one last note- the gentleman in line in front of me ordered a beef burrito and it was bigger than a baby. Simply huge, it looked like a meal for 3 or 4 people! OMG...

this is a cafeteria setting, and the food is authentic. i have been going to this resurant since i was a child and the food has never changed. the refried beans are bomba, as well as the rice. i suggest ordering a #12. their taquitos are actually tacos. the plate is big and very filling.

This place is near and dear to my heart because I can remember going there as a little girl. I've told this story many times, so here it goes again. Since my two sisters and I were raised by a single mother who worked as a housekeeper, you can only imagine how financially limited we were. Occassionally, my mother used to take us this family oriented restaurant. She used to order ONE super tostada which is HUGE. All four of us used to dig in with our fork and eat it "family style." And so if there is anything to be said about this restaurant it's the familial atmosphere plus the cheap and bountiful portions. It is authentic Mexican food, so it won't taste like your traditional "El Torito" or "Acapulco's." If you like BIG burritos (and you cannot lie), this is the place to go. I'm also a picky "lengua" (beef tongue -- i know) eater, and theirs is pretty good. Other finger-licking good dishes: -Torta Anything! -Pozole -Tacos

I've been coming here for about 25 years! I was a lil kid when my parents brought me and my brother....and now I bring my own kids. It's just one of those places that's always there when you crave a lil nostalgia and some damn good food. Carnitas taquitos, vegetarian or carnitas tostada, menudo on sundays, chicken chilaquiles, nachos, burritos, huevos con chorizo.......take your pick! damn, I might have to go for lunch tomorrow!!

this used to be my family's favorite place to go for Mexican food; I'm talking we used to eat there once a week without a doubt. I don't live with my family anymore, so I haven't been in a while, but thinking about their gigantic beef and rice burrito with meat sauce all over the top or a huge bowl of pozole makes me smile. It's cafeteria style and sooo good. There's usually a line to the door on the weekends, but that tells you their food is worth the wait. I won't be all positive though. It is pretty greasy. Their taquitos, which are actually like soft tacos, are dipped into oil or grease or something before they put the meat and cheese in, but you can just ask them to keep the tortilla dry so no big deal. Mmmm, i feel like some pozole.

I love this place too! I walk in hungry and I walk out overloaded with Mexicany goodness. With each bite, my insides scream "OH YEAH!" from the [awesome] the refried pinto beans (the best), inside the baby-sized El Abajeno burrito! You can't go wrong with the Super Tostada or the El Abajeno (except from getting too full!)

This place is around the corner from my home, so I've seen it many times. Yelp convinced me to try it out and I'm glad I did (though I'm glad I didn't read the review about the chewing gum in the guacamole... yikes.) If I ever need to feed an army on a budget, this is where I'll go. Holy moly... the husband ordered take out and brought home two square styrofoam containers. I didn't know what he'd ordered, so I picked one up and the container almost broke, the thing was so heavy. I opened it up and the ENTIRE thing is filled with a monster burrito from corner to corner. This, apparently, was the infamous El Abajeno burrito that fed the two of us at least 3 full meals. He also bought the monster tostada that was very tasty, and that is still sitting in my gut, I'm sure, now 2 weeks later. The fillings of beef and the carnitas were generous, and the red sauce with extra bits of beef inside was GREAT. The burrito itself (without even adding any salsa) was a tad spicy for my taste, but overall it was very good and an amazing deal for just under $9! The tostada was good sized and inexpensive too. This is definitely not a health food joint, but it's a good place for cheap, big portioned, decent flavored (not extraordinary, but good) Mexican food.

OMG so I was introduced to this place by my boyfriend it is AMAZING. The tacos have a special taste. I guess it's their specialty since everyone seems to talk about the carne asada tacos. I never really tasted anything else however I seen this man order a burrito it was Huge! It looked like the foot long from subway. You can imagine that. These past months I been going there so much and I could keep going daily just for the tacos. The parking is a hassle it has a small parking lot and it's hard to find parking since it's always full. I really recommend this place.

It would be ridiculous to label El Abajeno the best Mexican food in LA, but it is certainly my favorite. Their taquitos and posole are amazing and their asada burrito is nice, but it's their vegetarian burrito and their terribly fattening nachos that keep bringing me back. FYI, their vegetarian burrito is hardly that; its beans are loaded with lard and their rice is made with chicken stock--not to mention that you'll find a chunk of chicharron in it 3 out of 10 visits. Though their salsa is underwhelming, their food will not disappoint.

Reasonable prices and large portions. I usually order a burrito with meat sauce over the top of it. I should never finish it, but I always do. If you are really hungry, order the Abejeno burrito, but just know when to throw in the towel.

I had cheese enchiladas and a corn tamal; both were very good. Unfortunately, they forgot my flan and when I went back for it they made me pay again...I wasn't very happy about that, but since they don't give receipts, I had no way to prove that I'd paid for it. Anyway, it was all for nothing because it was the worst flan I have ever had...stale and just not made correctly...blech.

A cafeteria-style mexican joint with south-of-the-border prices and monster portions. Don't be fooled by the "taquitos"--they're giant tacos topped with mountains of savory carnitas. Share the namesake burrito with two friends and the three of you will be ready to burst. Please don't eat-and-drive: after lunch at El Abajeño you'll be begging for nap time.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
